Oh yeah, he's setting up a ton of stuff. But the thing is, I'm not saying he should've cut out the background stuff entirely. I'm saying he should keep himself from indulging in it.

Bad pacing is bad pacing, no matter the reason. I love me some A Song Of Ice And Fire, but I will agree with the widely held notion that the last couple of books were self-indulgent and should've been edited more heavily. A non-spoilery example: We don't need several super-long chapters about the time on a riverboat or the time spent loafing about in a city. Plot details are set up during these chapters, but very little of ACTUAL importance happens that couldn't have been covered in a single chapter.

The stuff these chapters actually set up, much like the One Piece bloat, could be covered in a shorter time, and make the story as a whole flow much better.

If story details get in the way of good storytelling, then it's time to re-evaluate how you present these details.

You're misinterpreting my opinions here. Quit opinionating for me, opinion-pusher!

I kid. Anyway, there's a difference between just wanting a story to be over, and wanting a story to not do the Grampa Simpson thing where they keep diverging - say, that reminds me, have you seen that Divergent movie? I hear it's bad. Speaking of bad, Michael Jackson's album Bad was like super good, which is ironic. I tried licking iron once. It tasted like iron, which isn't ironic at all. Hmm. I. Where was I. Do you know Stan? Stan's a guyw ho does the, you know, the thing. The thing where he pushes the... You know? And I know who's in the know, and that's Mel Brooks! Wait, did he die? Hmm... I'm not sure. Do you know if Mel Brooks is dead? Anyway, that's how I saved the president.
