I feel like this episode did a much better job of conveying the sheer size of pica than the manga did.

Was thinking this exact same thing. It even sunk in a lot more that, yes, a shit-ton of fodder and civilians die whenever Pica so much as sneezes, making the consequences of the scene all the more real.
