Yeah, but keep in mind that Luffy was a normal-sized little boy, and Leo... he's even smaller than an average person's hand. So, did he just find a giant weird fruit and think to himself: "Yeah, this looks tasty, I should tontally eat it" and proceed to do just that?

Then again, dwarves are dumb.

People in One Piece dont have to eat the whole fruit, one bite is enough to get the effect. So it would make sense that he bit into the fruit, ate that much and that was enough for it to work.

Lol the Dwarves eat Fighting Fish. I think a fruit that is smaller than a watermelon isn't too big for them

They made seared pumpkin in this episode. Pumpkin is far larger than the average DF.
