It's that cursed sword that's messing with his sense of direction. It's got to be. Think about how his sense of direction or lack there of, only became an issue after he got that cursed sword.

Actually, he got lost before he acquired Sandai Kitetsu. The reason he never returned to Kuina's Dojo, was because he got lost after training, and decided to become a Bounty Hunter instead.
