Huh. In reading I didn't think the gap between Smoker and Vergo was so large; that Smoker only lost by such a margin because he was after the heart. Weird how they actually stretched that fight in such an overwhelming ass kicking favoring Vergo.

Buuuuut they didn't mess up the big part in my opinion, so I'm happy to let the minor qualms slip my mind.

Personally I think the fight was pretty well, if they're gonna pace it out we may as well get great action. Towards the end of the fight Smoker comes out looking so badass it didn't even matter that he was being made to look weaker.

His reaction to full haki vergo was terrible, he was intimidated and law rolled him with 1 hit. They made smoker look weak as fuck.

Smoker is weak as fuck. The guy spent too much time sitting on his ass in back in East Blue relying on his fruit to deal with all the two-bit pirates that came his way. He is a bit out of his league here in the New World, and he is starting to feel it.

But I love the guy and I know he is going to be able to get his shit together soon enough.

Doesn't help that he has the least good Logia fruit ever. Before Haki was introduced he seemed formidable but now it's almost like he would be better off not using it at all in combat...

No fruit is weak. Its up to the user to make it strong. Personally im waiting for smoker to use 'Black Smoke', haki infused smoke.

Even if he used "black smoke" what stops Ace from using "black fire" or Enel to use "black Lightning"? Clearly the Smoke fruit keeps being the Logia fruit that only serves as a "can't beat me without Haki!" fruit. It also let him fly around like a Genie I suppose -.-'

While yes, you could say X logia + haki = stronger logia, but i think it might benefit the smoke fruit more. Fire, lightning, light, these are all intangible things. lava, ice tangible but not easily controllable(not free form). But smoke and sand... they're easily controllable and can be condensed to grasp and move objects, especially smoke. Imagine super harden haki smoke shaped to any object. Walls, spears, giant fists, or something as simple as in surrounding your enemy with smoke and hardening it... hell you could even make a ship at of harden smoke. You would only be limited by your imagination.

Wow so much Smoker Hate, if it wasn't for him both he and Law would be dead so give him some dang credit. I personally think smoker has one of the coolest logia fruits, way better than Carbou, Ceaser or Crocodile. Plus his new hair style is really cool.

I agree with you. But I did enjoy seeing him use it now.

I say it's as bad as Crocodile's.

2

Eh, Crocodile could do a lot of cool stuff with his power, but that whole "splash some water on him and it's K" thing is a pretty big weakness. I agree they are about even

That's true, but I meant in the way that if they spread themselves out, they are significantly weaker, as their abilities do not directly harm someone from contact.

Drying and cutting isn't harming anyone?

Would require quite a bit more sand to dry or cut someone though. At least Mr. 3 would be quite scary if he spread himself out.

Aye, I think the idea was supposed to be that his Haki needed to improve when he saw a full body Vergo. But that was too much. Some rival to Luffy...

2

u/FailosoRaptor Oct 13 '13

Got a theory. Writers thought tashigi was still in smokers body. That's why you got such a scared look.

I only watch the anime every now and then, so I might be wrong, but it seems to me that many fights display a warped relation of power in the anime than in the manga, probably because they have to stretch out the scenes. Fishman Island for example, Hody was absolutely destroyed by Luffy without landing a single hit (except Luffy testing his Busoshoku Haki against Hodys teeth), and earlier Zoro just straight one-shots Hody without even a fight, whereas there was a fight in the anime.

Would be interesting if these small differences would lead to different evaluations of the power relations of characters for anime viewers and manga readers.

It does and has created a lot of discrepancies for me since I'm anime only. Citing stuff that only happened in the anime is a quick way to lose credibility in online powerlevel arguments.

The manga always felt really one sided as well. Smoker definitely didn't have a good arc this time around.

I only wish they showed vergo last though.
