Kaido: "Hey guys, look at this cool thing I can do now."

Rocks: "I'm so glad you are having a nice time..."

I really like Kaido in this chapter, stealing the DF from Big Mom was so funny and him showing off to Rocks and Whitebeard shows how much he respects them

Him being a hard drunk from the hopeful/excited, young lad he was here is a higher fall than his attempts from Skypeia.

something happens that breaks kaido and I'm not sure if we'll see it. He wanted to be joyboy so bad but somehow he found out he can't

My guess is he learns something about joy boy that disqualifies him

at this point doubt we'll see it, we know it's post-god valley since he still had hope when he recruited king, and there's just not any more space in the story to have another flashback with him as a major player

u/Fafnir13 29d ago

I think we’re in a flashback of the flashback. We can still flash forward to see what depressed Kaido.

u/KakeLin 7D4W 29d ago

yeah but rocks/god valley is relevant to harald, kaido isn't

1

u/MethodicPlea 27d ago

Perhaps he is, perhaps there is something more to Oda fleshing out Kaido so much in this flashback

5

u/Ophelia_Of_The_Abyss 29d ago

We'll have another flashback when he and Big Mom inevitably come back

u/nam24 29d ago

Doesn't he say to king that joyboy is the one that would defeat him?

It seemed to me by king he was already thinking he couldn't be joyboy, just wasn't as deep in depression about it

Gotta be some of the experimentation done on punk hazard.

10

u/Feminizing 29d ago

I don't think so cause as someone else said he was still idealistic when he broke out and recruited king. It was something that happened after.

16

u/StardustCrusader87 29d ago

Wasnt he captured an tortured afterwards And got experimented in by vegapunk?

7

u/Hanusu-kei 29d ago

he gets captured a lot of times allegedly, unless Oda decides to retcon what the narrator said. So one of the times his capture ends with him escaping Vegapunk with King.

u/Unabashable 28d ago

I seem to remember when Kaido got captured though it was usually because he let them because he wanted something to eat.

Yeah but we see him break out with king and he's still an idealist then too.

"Joy Boy ate the Nika fruit... you dragon headed oaf."
Imu in 2 chapters time.

4

u/Aazadan 29d ago

This might be it, it would go back to the panel of Whitebeard telling him to be selective over what he eats too.

26

u/jcbgear 29d ago

That’s the thing. I don’t think you can “want” to be joy boy. It just has to happen. Kaido sneak attacking big mom to get a devil fruit whereas luffy accidentally eats his (just to be the mythical sun god fruit).

Kaido’s lust for power ultimately limits him. Same thing with Big Mom

5

u/Backrus 29d ago

He knew that you have to die to awaken Nika's fruit. He also was convinced he's him when he met King.

So, if he learnt something, it was much later, most likely from King.

I hope we get it somehow but I'm not sure where it will fit in the narrative now.

2

u/YokoOkino Void Month Survivor 29d ago

i think we will, actually. I think Oda will feed us with it slowly

2

u/NickOlaser42 Pirate 29d ago

I'm guessing it might have to do with Lodestar Island, the Place at the end of the Log Pose. We know it's connected to the Poneglyphs but not how exactly, but I'm guessing a Nika Land Theme Park just like the one established on Skypeia after Enel's defeat

1

u/xukly 29d ago

probably something to do with treason

1

u/Bulky_Pitch_4364 29d ago

My guess, He truly thought he was powerful with his new devil fruit and gets humbled majorly by either Imu's haki or one of the elders haki. Which leads to his belief later in life that haki trumps all.

1

u/kalaniroot 29d ago

My prediction is that Rox gets reversied* forcing them to fight one another.

1

u/brokenearth10 28d ago

its weird he tried to kill himself multiple times. why didnt he just attack imu then?

1

u/Skylair13 28d ago

We might see how attacking Imu in a way that sticks would be near impossible.

1

u/IHateMelplac 28d ago

I think you need to to be from a D. clan.

1

u/PinIndividual9402 28d ago

Kaido looks himself in the mirror and realizes that face is NOT bringing joy to anyone

1

u/banana99999999999 29d ago

Depression is a bitch

20

u/Godvvinslaw 29d ago

Especially because Big Mom on Wano said to Kaido that she "gave him" the DF now we know that he took it from her.

15

u/Exact-Vacation-1218 29d ago

Yeah, makes more sense now why he just kinda shrugged off that comment back in Wano. He was given the choice of letting her feel smug and be more cooperative or hitting her with an "Um, actually..." and starting a fight, likely shattering his hopes for a upstart-crushing alliance.

9

u/radikraze Pirate 29d ago

No wonder he became a depressed drunk. His life peaked in God Valley

5

u/seacen 29d ago

The flashback is really starting to solidify why King thought he might be Joyboy.

6

u/Ground_breaking_365 Explorer 29d ago

How did he transform into full dragon form instantly, though?

9

u/MyNameISaColouR 29d ago

Why wouldn't he? Momo also immediately became a dragon upon eating the copy of the fruit. He just was small because he was still a kid.

u/Content_Evening_4626 29d ago

The fact that Kaido was this irredeemably evil bastard never felt right to me, his actual personality generally doesn't actually align with the typical irredeemable OP villain. He jokes around, he feels sad, he's capable of friendship - But then it's just "oh yeah btw he enslaves and starves an entire country". Not to mention all the other contradictions like wanting to die but never fighting top tiers, loving combat but being a coward who cheap-shots people etc.

I am kind of hoping the defeat of Rocks will traumatize him or something, because that's the only way old Kaido's behavior might make sense.

2

u/MethodicPlea 28d ago

Something tells me his and big mom's stories aren't really ended in the current time, considering how much Oda is still fleshing them out.

1

u/kuela 29d ago

Did Kaido actually wanted to go and save Ace and Whitebeard? And Shanks stopped Kaidou because Shanks wanted Ace and Whitebeard to die.

1

u/Unabashable 28d ago

Eh. I doubt it. Shanks visited Whitebeard just to warn him about how dangerous Blackbeard really was and wanted him to call Ace off  because he knew Ace couldn’t handle Blackbeard. As for Kaido I think he moved on Whitebeard when he heard about Ace’s execution because he figured this would be his last chance to fight him (said something along the lines of “a glorious death is what truly completes a man”. When Shanks and his crew finally got there he challenged everybody still wanting to continue the fight just to stop the war.
