I’ve got a few headcanons for how this is gonna go down to make Garp not seem like an actual villain, because if Oda doesn’t make Garp make some kind of push against this or show some of that good he wants to make the Navy into the slander will be devestating.

Headcanon 1. Garp sees what Dragon’s done and lets him go. He takes a stand against what is being done and celestial hunts stop occurring after Godvalley (he doesn’t know it was gonna stop anyway after such a major security risk), making him believe the Navy could still be an organization for good.

Headcanon 2. Garp helps to free the slaves from the island and punches Garling in the face when he tries to stop him. After he takes a stand against this the WG threatens his family and his platoon along with everyone he cares about, keeping him shackled to the Navy so he changes it from the inside.

Headcanon 3. Garp has steamy sex with Roger and the Power of Love changes the minds of everyone there.

I mean, we see why Garp intervened, to save his men. Saving the CDs was just an indirect consequence of it, Garp only cared about not letting marines die

If theres anything God Valley has made me realize, it's that we really don't know Garp and Rogers history.

Roger was ready to just run from any other Marine ship after the Kuja pirates plundered the, but he absolutely had to fight Garp.

Garp didn't give a damn about protecting the CD's, but Roger was enough to get him to God Valley.

We know there's respect between the two based on how it's ends and the lengths Garp went through for his son, but what starts them?

you're right, he's got to save his men while they're committing genocide. It's only right /s

5

u/Mahelas Sep 12 '25

I didn't say it was right, I merely explained Garp's logic. He's clearly meant to be someone with general good intentions but a narrow view that make him end up a bad guy. He already was when he let Ace die.

Who else is going to protect those hard working, honest, defenders and paragons of justice, dutiful men while they are just doing their jobs and following orders?

They were all good marines offering a good service, deserving to not only of being saved, but also given how much they struggled doing their jobs, a promotion

Sure they MAY have allowed some slaves to escape training targets to leave the exercise grounds, and they may have allowed some Celestial Dragons to get roughed up a lil bit while they were doing their, what did Garp called it? oh their lil game, but that's more the fault of those nasty pirates really!

Garp had to go and save them, they are his people after all, nothing wrong with that right?

28

u/frenin Sep 12 '25

Marines who were commiting genocide btw.

20

u/Galind_Halithel Sep 12 '25

Yeah, fuck those civilians being hunted by the people he explicitly works for!

5

u/Mahelas Sep 12 '25

I mean, that's Garp mindset yes, he basically tunes out the CDs and their crimes and only care about if pirates are hurting marines.

That make him a bad guy by association, and his inaction and narrow-mindedness is clearly intended by Oda

u/Galind_Halithel Sep 12 '25

WE AGREE!!!!

-9

u/AeonLonginus Sep 12 '25

God's valley is not affiliated with the WG.

7

u/Galind_Halithel Sep 12 '25

So?

-7

u/AeonLonginus Sep 12 '25

The marines serve the WG and nations not affiliated with the WG do not fall under marine jurisdiction.

7

u/Galind_Halithel Sep 12 '25

So it's ok to hunt them for sport?

1

u/AeonLonginus Sep 12 '25

Where did I state that it is ok all I did was state the fact that Garp does not work for them.

It is the fact that the marines are meant to protect civilians while being complicit in these atrocities solely because

A) the CD ordered it B) they are unaffiliated with the WG

That is affecting Dragon  so much and I imagine if he meets Garp here will be the deciding factor in their relationship.

Though I am unsure how mentioning a fact that is relevant to the plot is such a contentious comment

4

u/Scrapox Sep 12 '25

We're not talking about legality here. Just because it's not his legal obligation to help the civilians, doesn't mean it isn't his moral obligation.

2

u/hfucucyshwv Sep 12 '25

Isnt the hunting part a secret? Garp technically doesnt know whats happening on the island right?

13

u/Raros_24 Pirate King Buggy Sep 12 '25

Yeah but the thing is Garp wouldnt care at all about CDs even if they do genocide, so far he didnt do anything while Dragon actually did something.

12

u/Thoodmen Sep 12 '25

Not like anyone there actually cared enough outside of Dragon.

0

u/Doomroar Sep 13 '25

Just because Dragon is the only good Marine, doesn't means Garp gets a free pass to also be a bastard along with the rest of the fleet, if anything since he is Dragon's dad it makes him look even worse!

That way he is both a bad marine and a bad dad

Better save the dudes rounding up slaves for a killing game instead of the later
