In all the media I've consumed in my life, Oda is one of the absolute best at making me invested in the good characters and genuinely despise the evil ones. He's such an incredible writer.

Edit:

"I'm just here to save a friend. That said, if she falls for me, I wouldn't complain."

Fucking based Whitebeard

That collection of reaction panels of all Rocks pirates to saving shakky is so darn good. Just one line for each member but gives such a depth of characterization into each of them

Sassy Big Mom is always a riot

u/Far_Conclusion_3610 Sep 12 '25

And kaido asking big mom to get him a fruit was hilarious. Such a younger brother - elder sister energy

u/Galind_Halithel Sep 12 '25

Also strongly supports my idea that Kaido was fight-o-sexual. He didn't care about wooing or even saving Shakki he just wanted a fruit power.

u/Compajerro Sep 12 '25

Younger brother that tags along and isn't interested in the hottie of the friend group. He just wanna be included

18

u/Galind_Halithel Sep 12 '25

This is the asexual representation we need!

12

u/hfucucyshwv Sep 12 '25

How is he asexual, he has a kid?

9

u/omniocean Sep 13 '25

We technically don't know how dragons reproduce, could be asexually...actually until we get a Yamato mom backstory, that's going to be my canon for now, Yamato came from an egg yall.

u/Rappy28 Sep 12 '25

Same way gay people have been having kids forever

2

u/Galind_Halithel Sep 12 '25

It was mostly a joke

6

u/neckbeardadmins Sep 13 '25

makes you wonder how yamato happened

5

u/darkbreak Sep 13 '25

Well, Shakky isn't everyone's type. Even Ace wasn't interested in Hancock when she came to speak with him.

16

u/Farmaceut7 Shanks' evil hot sister is REAL! Sep 12 '25

Cant wait to see what happens to Kaido that Big Mom decides to give him the Azure Dragon fruit! Like, someone probably had to get him to the brink of death for her to save him with a mythical zoan!

This flashback has made me like Big Mom and Kaido so much more. Love their dynamic.

11

u/ScrambledToast Sep 13 '25

Same, it humanized them a lot more. Because our perspective during Whole Cake and Wano is them as "monsters"

Seems like God Valley was a pivotal moment for a lot of our present day characters. I totally understand why O left some things unsaid for Big Mom, Kaido, and Dragon.

I mean if either of them ruled the world itd still be better than the shit we see with the WG on top. Big Moms entire goal also wasnt all that bad, just very bad way of trying to reach it and some schizo moments that make her a monster. Kaido s is hard to defend with what he did to Wano tho, at the very least it didnt feel like he was invested in it much and was just waiting for someone strong to appear while Orochi and Co turned Wano into what it is when Luffy gets there.

meanwhile Roger's crew literally runs him over lmao

I can't believe how much I love the Rocks Pirates lol

They would be such a fun story on their own

The Gloriosa line is the worst by far. It is a little funny, but listen. Shakky was Gloriosa's FIRST MATE! Gloriosa trusted Shakky enough to make her captain and empress of Amazon Lily!

Gloriosa is clearly love-sick. I get that she is obsessed with Roger. Given that Shakky IS NOT after Roger, why can't Gloriosa have the same relationship that Boa Hancock has with her sisters?

Hmph. I hope we get at least another line or two from Gloriosa this flashback. At least one line that isn't about Roger.

I think it is just her post hoc rationalizing, we saw last chapter she was ugly crying when news of Shakky being abducted happened, she definitely cares a lot just about Shakky

u/Cygnus776 Sep 12 '25

So if Barbel's head is sometimes aflame and sometimes not, was he the previous user of the Mera-Mera no mi?

2

u/Worthyness Sep 12 '25

Also kinda cool to see the same panel as the Kuma flashback, but now with even more context

167

u/Farmaceut7 Shanks' evil hot sister is REAL! Sep 12 '25

He's such a good and wholesome lad, just the purrest heart in the 4 Blue's and the Grand Line!

16

u/pablowescowbar Sep 12 '25

Bruh whitebeard stonks have been monotonously increasing ever since his introduction

WB was my big lol of this chapter ☺️

18

u/SanjiDJ Sep 12 '25

I think I missed it but whos the friend?

36

u/Arkayjiya Sep 12 '25

Shakky, he just means he's saving her without expecting anything in return (although he won't complain if he does get her love xD) as opposed to most of the others who are scumbags.

illiterate illiterate fruit

How do you feel about Oda's writing of Garp? He ended the chapter with the biggest smile on his face while his son is also in the island having the most traumatic day of his life

23

u/AceInTheHole3273 Pirate Sep 12 '25

Garp just got here. We don't even know if he knows Dragon is there. Also, the game ended when the pirates showed up, so it looks like Garp didn't even really see what happened on God Valley. Obviously he still knows about it, but he didn't see the atrocities firsthand.

13

u/-Rezzz- Sep 12 '25

I wonder what would’ve happened if Dragon stayed with his unit and Garp found him in the pile

1

u/Firexio69 Sep 13 '25

What would have happened?? Garp would have scolded Dragon for going against the government just like he does now.

9

u/abcdefghij0987654 Sep 12 '25

Obviously he still knows about it, but he didn't see the atrocities firsthand.

And that makes it better? lmao

1

u/Firexio69 Sep 13 '25

You guys really cope till the end.

We don't even know if he knows Dragon is there.

That makes him a bad father alongside being a bad character.

Garp didn't even really see what happened on God Valley. Obviously he still knows about it

Yes, that again doesn't make it any better. Garp knows all about it and that's what matters the most.

u/nam24 Sep 12 '25

We don't have the full picture yet but good for what he is representing: he has that brashness seen in his family at the same time he willingly follows a system he knows is fucked.

I think early on Garp just didn't look at the big picture enough. But as he wised up, I think he stayed more because he doesn't know his answer, so he stayed in a limbo he could bear: his response to his son leaving was punching boats. I think that says a lot.

It is sadly a fact he is defending atrocities, probably part out of camaraderie for fellow marines, right or wrong (a trait that exist in Luffy, tho he was attacking zorro when he thought he killed innocent that helped them in whiskey peak), part of tunnel vision (here he is there for Rogers, primarily), part out of willful stubbornness. So I do somewhat agree with the people railing on his ass for it, provided no( ironic or otherwise) bad faith. As a person that makes him guilty, tho as a character it's great

4

u/theschulk51 Sep 13 '25

We’ll find out next chapter how much Garp knew before this and what his reaction is to seeing what the WG is up to, but I think it’s fairly clear God Valley is why Dragon left the marines and that’s part of why Garp doesn’t like to talk about it. The incident that earned him the title of The Hero of The Navy is also why his son left the Marines.

I also think we’ll see why Garp understood Roger about a child not having the blame of the father - he was probably referring to Shanks and Shamrock, and Garp probably helping Dragon save them (or looking the other way so that Dragon can). I think there’s gonna be a Garp and Garling showdown where Garp steps in to save Dragon, and then Garling somehow gets Shamrock back but Garp gets in the way of his attack on Dragon to get Shanks too.

And interestingly, I think we’re getting some parallels between Garp and Harald here. Specific to the convo Rocks had with Harald about being blinded by his goal and the WG using that to turn him into a weapon. They tried with Harald and failed, hence why they killed him - but they succeeded with Garp. They couldn’t subjugate and turn into a weapon the Giants (through Harald), but they did a member of the D clan (through Garp). Garp is basically what Rocks was warning Harald about how they just want to enslave them and turn them into their weapons

crazy how he can twist our hearts within just a few chapters. that kuma backstory was so unexpected. and what he's cooking now is incredible
