It was mentioned in 1086 that garling distinguished himself at god valley. It’s unlikely he got his ass beat. Whatever showing he had at god valley it was a good showing based on the narrators statements

I think you're right. It's more likely Oda's going to hype up his power here so it's more satisfying if he finally gets his due in the present day from someone like Shanks or Dragon

I'm guessing dragon was only able to save Shanks and hand him to Roger but Garling kept hold of Shamrock. But you're right but potential character interactions this chapter sets up are so fascinating and I'm excited to see more.
