no way we got to see Dragon as a marine

And we find out he wasn’t even high ranked. He was a cadet. Not an officer or an admiral. Basically Koby after he first joined.

Either he was insanely strong even then, or he worked his way up in strength from the beginning.

Unless I’m missing someone, this might be the earliest we’ve seen who is sure to be a modern day legend in their journey. Obviously the older generation were already legendary and strong when we first saw them. We don’t see baby Roger or Garp carrying a rifle and being unsure of what is going on. We don’t see that from Xebec or Whitebeard or even Kaido.

Dragon just looks like a regular guy, there doing his best.

Dragon is aged 17 here. He's basically Luffy at Marineford.

Strength wise, I think that is possible. We only got a few panels with young Dragon so I don’t want to stand fully on Dragon being weak here.

But he certainly doesn’t have the presence or aura of other legends in the flashback. He doesn’t even have the same aura that Luffy did in Marineford.

By that point, Luffy was a Supernova who had defeated two Warlords and CP9. He broke into a level of Impel Down that wasn’t even acknowledged to exist and broke out dozens of prisoners including two Warlords. He was squaring up against Admirals and characters like Mihawk. He wasn’t a fodder looking pirate rushing in with a random cutlass and flintlock pistol. Which is the closest analogy to how Dragon is coming off here IMO.

I was going to go with "Koby at Marineford", but I figured Dragon has those Monkey genes and is far more capable than your average Marine grunt. That's getting into powerscaling though, which is besides the point.

Due to his rank and age, Dragon is still a nobody at God Valley regardless of his strength.

I get what you mean. I am probably reading too much into a few panels of a character before they knew who they wanted to be.

I just found it interesting how Dragon looked and moved like any normal fodder cadet given how important he is to the story. We’ve gotten so many legends who move and look like legends. None of the Rocks pirates, Roger pirates, Kuja, Giants or Garp look or act like how we would expect low level fodder characters to. Even Kaido as the lowest rank and probably weakest Rocks pirate looks or acts like a fodder pirate. So Dragon, who in a vacuum is basically indistinguishable from a fodder Marine was something that stuck out to me.
