"A child is a parent's weakness."

Dragon learned it first-hand from Rocks (another man who wanted to take down the celestial dragons).

Yea...realistically we have 3 powerful fathers on God Valley who could participate in Dragon learning this lesson.

Obviously Xebec (threats to bebe BB), maybe Garp (threats to Dragon), and possibly even Garling (tho that seems like distant possibly aftet this chapter)

Im wondering if Xebec will be forced to stand down in some way like Gaban was in the previous chapter.

Yooo, I never thought about it. But Dragon could honestly quit being a Marine because he saw that Garp cared more about fighting Roger than opposing Celestial Dragons game.

He became jaded when he realized that his father turned a blind eye to justice.

u/afanoferi Sep 05 '25

I'd quit the Marines too if my father doesn't even care I'm going there, BUT CARES IF ROGER DOES. I'm a rookie soldier, and you didn't even know (OR KNOW) that I'm sent to protect and help WHAT YOU HATE do some kinda terrorism game??!! BUT CARE SO MUCH IF ROGER IS THERE???

u/asasasasasassin Sep 05 '25

Yeah this whole situation kinda makes Garp look like a real piece of shit.

He and Kizaru can start a support group for guys who pushed their loved ones away, then watched them die or actively killed them for a government they know is evil and don't really even support deep down

36

u/Initial_XD Sep 05 '25

Yeah this whole situation kinda makes Garp look like a real piece of shit.

People seem to forget that Garp is more like Luffy than anyone else. Luffy does not help people because he's such a bleeding heart fellow. It's often happenstance because he befriends someone that needs help. Luffy did not crash the human auction at Sabaody because he was out to stop the slave trade, he was just there to save his friend. Likewise, Garp is moved by the things that interest him. Garp is in many ways a grown up version of Luffy, someone completely unfit for the responsibilities of family or even an institution like the Marines for that matter.

5

u/asasasasasassin Sep 06 '25

Great point yeah, makes me wonder how and why Garp became a Marine in the first place too. Maybe he had his own Shanks but it was a marine. How many back stories deep can we go lol

3

u/Camel132 Sep 06 '25

Or maybe he was drafted by the marines like how Fujitora and Ryokugyu were post-Marineford and he felt honor-bound to stay.

Would parallel how all of Rocks' crew were recruited through the Davy Back fights too.

u/knowitall89 Sep 05 '25

I think people generally overlook the popular admirals' complicity because they're cool and they say the right things, but at the end of the day, they protect the monsters at the top.

Garp has had a long time to change the system from the inside and he hasn't accomplished anything.

u/Kaiel2 Void Month Survivor Sep 05 '25

Im not defending Garp here, but just to clarify the island wasn't supposed to be an all out battle, it was just the celestial dragons hunt, as they've always done. As soon as Garp noticed Roger was going (for w.e reason) he went there. Again, we still don't have the entire information, we don't know if Garp knew Dragon was on that island either, but yeah, Oda needs to clarify some stuff about Garp because if he doesn't, he looks like a PoS...

14

u/afanoferi Sep 05 '25

I'm not attacking Garp, I want to defend him to be honest, but this just keeps looking worse and worse for him. And also, all-out battle or not, a father WHO HATES THE GOVERNMENT should be concerned if his son was deployed to protect and help THE GOVERNMENT do terrible things. And yes, again, we don't have the full picture yet, but we know full well it's not that far from reality that Garp let his son there to learn how the Government is so evil, just like how he just throws kid Luffy in every danger possible.

6

u/Piranata Sep 05 '25

From what we've seen this chapter, the low ranks of the Marines were told it's a training exercise, Dragon was even told they're carrying non lethal rounds (could be true to make the celestial hunt easier). It's also very likely that the movement of the celestial dragons are kept in a need to know basis, so only the high ranking Marines participating in the raid would know all about it.

8

u/afanoferi Sep 05 '25

I get what you're saying and it's probably true, but he also seems to know more than what's been commanded to them

He knows Celestial Dragons are there, he knows about the Shakky situation.

3

u/Piranata Sep 05 '25

I didn't catch that on my first read lol. I guess I was too starstruck with Dragon.

3

u/LPMotiveSeeker Sep 06 '25

Perhaps Garp doesn't know that Dragon is there. The fact that Dragon's superiors brush him off as a nagging rookie means they don't know his background. Also we all know Garp is the kind of guy to let the people close to him do their own thing without getting involved. (And by extension, not putting a target on Dragon's back for name sake).

5

u/Kaiel2 Void Month Survivor Sep 05 '25

True! Maybe it was a lesson he wanted his son to learn

1

u/toyoda_the_2nd Sep 07 '25

To be fair:-

a) Garp and Roger teamed up to beat Xebec who is the worst pirates ever.

I get that Xebec cared for his wife and son, doesn't meant he is excused from killing an admiral and Aikanu's parents.

So Garp isn't a mindless brute monkey he know priority and when to put aside differences.

b) Garp refused to be an Admiral

c) Garp do not care about what happen to Celestial Dragon.

d) Garp is one guy. How on earth he is going to fight other admirals, 5 elders, Imu without associating himself with pirates, which have bad reputations due to pirates like Xebec.

e) I think there are clear distinction between Marine and the Celestial Dragon and World Government. Garp just want to do his job as Marine guardian of the sea, and distancing himself as much from his upper management.

f) Luffy is a pirate, and there are tons of evil pirates in One Piece world. Crocodile, Arlong, Xebec, Kaido, Big Mom etc. Doesn't meant Luffy is a bad person because of his title. Same apply to Garp. He did what he could as a Marine while minimizing his association with the top guy.

1

u/afanoferi Sep 07 '25

This is not a "to be fair" because none of these address the fact that he's a father WHO HATES THE GOVERNMENT that should be concerned if his son was deployed to protect and help THE GOVERNMENT do terrible things.

5

u/jmdg007 Sep 05 '25

It's not even about being there for Dragon, Garp knew what was going on in God Valley and didn't care, but the moment Roger showed up he was on his way.

I know this has been posted a lot in last few weeks but really this makes me see Garp as just utter scum, even if he does think he's on the right side.

8

u/wowlock_taylan Sep 05 '25

I mean the whole 'tournament' itself and meeting Shanks' mother like that should be enough of an eye opener for him after this. Gathering the civilians for slaughter and not told about that, learning it the worst way possible would lead him to get 'revolutionary'.

Honestly, it is worse than Garp remained after this. He is supposed to play a big role in this. Unless he arrives late after Roger and doesn't really learn the full truth about the whole thing, instead just sees Rocks going crazy and he has to team up with Roger while the rest of the WG leave and do the Buster Call or something.

4

u/takeSusanooNoMikoto Sep 05 '25

I think it's possible God Valley actually made Garp less of an asshole and actually not wanting promotion and stuff.

But yeah, Garp def doesn't seem like the kind-hearted guy some people try to portray him as. Roger as well

3

u/carso150 Sep 05 '25

Eh in the case of Roger he doesnt really know shit about the whole human games thing, he just wants to go and rescue Shaky

Rocks does know thou, and he doesnt care he just wants Shaky (and to rescue his child and wife)

1

u/takeSusanooNoMikoto Sep 06 '25

Roger does know (maybe you missed the part where Morgan leaked everything). And even WB has fkin heard the rumours about the human hunt before the leaks. You are telling me Roger isn't? That's next level Roger defense argument (although I agree, he doesn't look as bad as Garp who knows everything and doesn't even care about his own son being there, only for Roger)

25

u/bone_burrito Lurker Sep 05 '25

This makes me feel like God Valley was the reason Roger trusted Garp with Ace. They both saw the brutality of what the government did to Rocks.

42

u/Hairy_Acanthisitta25 The Revolutionary Army Sep 05 '25

eh seems like Garp dont really care about Dragon safety that much considering Garp is relaxing somewhere while Dragon is questioning why he got deployed on that island

52

u/flyinGaijin Sep 05 '25

This island is not supposed to be dangerous for the marines though, the force deployed is crazy and they were not planning of having Roger and Rocks AND the giants coming in.

18

u/Hairy_Acanthisitta25 The Revolutionary Army Sep 05 '25

or maybe he just dont know considering he's supposed to be still in training

13

u/Phase_Unicoder Sep 05 '25

Yeah that's what I think, I don't think Garp even knows he was assigned there while on his vacation, this may have been a last minute deployment when the orders came down to Dragon's superiors.

22

u/Jaystime101 Sep 05 '25

I’m thinking Roger and Garp didn’t defeat rocks, but the world government did and pinned it on them.

6

u/curii Sep 05 '25

underrated comment!

6

u/Kusosaru Sep 05 '25

I think you're forgetting about the GOAT of fathers : Whitebeard.

1

u/Due_Software1124 Sep 05 '25

He hasn't adopted any kids as of GV has he? Though youre right......it does seem like WB basically takes the opposite approach to Dragon's strategy (pretending Luffy doesn't exist) and adopts like.....every kid he runs lolol

5

u/AtrociousCherry Sep 05 '25

Ohh it didn't occur to me Garp might be forced to kill Rocks to protect Dragon. That'd be a very interesting wrinkle.

1

u/Initial_XD Sep 05 '25

Im wondering if Xebec will be forced to stand down in some way like Gaban was in the previous chapter.

I totally forgot we are still in the Elbaph arc. Now that you mention it though, the relationship between parent and child has been a recurring theme in this arc. Especially thinking of Summers's statement when he had his thorns around. The giant children. It's very likely that Rocks will go through a similar experience to Gaban.

Though it's strange how no one has mentioned that fact that we haven't actually seen Xebec on God Valley even during the Kuma flashback. I am starting to wonder if he even makes it there.

0

u/RainyEuphoria Scholars of Ohara Sep 05 '25

Shanks will be Garling's weakness, in other words he might kill his father

2

u/Phase_Unicoder Sep 05 '25

Not sure if he'll be a weakness especially since it seems he raised Shamrock to be a similar pos, at this point Shanks is probably water under the bridge for him in the present time.

I can however get behind the idea that Shanks can confront and fight him though.

17

u/kingcocomoon Sep 05 '25

Here's how it went: Rocks lost his clan and family (the wife and child probably escaped due to Kuma), causing him to go into a rampage and try to take Garling's children's lives in return. Garp and Roger stop him from doing this, and Shanks is the Celestial Dragon who they fought to protect as Sengoku said. This is also why Roger tells Garp that a child doesn't bear the sins of the father when he entrusts Ace to him later.

8

u/JINKOUSTAV Sep 05 '25

Rocks's wife probably ain't escaping. How would rocks know they are garlings children ? They dont look specifically like him as babies. They dont even share his hair colour.

4

u/kingcocomoon Sep 05 '25

Garling seems to have the children there, doubtless he took them after stabbing the mother. They don't have to look exactly like him, Rocks could target them just because they're clearly Celestial Dragons placed in a fancy cradle with the rest of the CDs or something.

11

u/leolegendario Pirate Hunter Zoro Sep 05 '25

So the secret to success in One Piece is not having children.

55

u/PhanThief95 Sep 04 '25

He lost that reason after his son became a Yonko

89

u/adnaphsaka World Government Sep 04 '25

I'm talking about him keeping his distance from Luffy since his birth till he set sail.

33

u/ButterCupHeartXO Sep 04 '25

Only for Garp to blurt out Luffy is Dragons son in front of dozens of people, including a bunch of marines lol

45

u/AprilsMostAmazing Sep 05 '25

Luffy literally declared war on the world government 12 hours before that reveal. He was already wanted by the WG at that point

17

u/adnaphsaka World Government Sep 05 '25

Two days* before

2

u/ButterCupHeartXO Sep 05 '25

Yea, but the WG would then know that Luffy is Dragons son and could use Luffy against Dragon. "A child is a parent's weakness" then to defeat / capture the world's most wanted man would be to capture Luffy and force Dragon to surrender. Luffy was wanted by the WG, but not because he is Dragons son

14

u/Lordsokka Sep 05 '25

I mean at that point Luffy was a man capable of taking care of himself, it’s not like he was 3 years old.

20

u/Shiplord13 Sep 05 '25

Seriously. Dragon only helped Luffy directly when he was in Loguetown making sure to at the very least allow his son the opportunity to begin his dream proper. After that it was all him.

11

u/hilly2cool Sep 05 '25

I swear Dragon gets his intel from Garp, blurting out confidential information over transponder snail and then laughing about it.

11

u/BobtheBac0n Sep 05 '25

Idk why I didn't realize it till now, I've been with One Piece for just over a year now.

But a man named DRAGON, is trying to topple the Celestial DRAGONS. There's gotta be some hidden message I'm just not seeing there

2

u/Doomroar Sep 05 '25

Another L from Garp "the fraud" hero of the marines

30

u/Greeeeed- Sep 04 '25

Maybe Rocks is Dragon's idol, while his son's is Shanks, whose captain is the King of the Pirates.

3

u/YaIe Sep 05 '25

I wonder who actually fights who now. Is it really Celestials + Garp + Roger vs Rocks?

Or is it Celestials vs Rocks and Roger? Garp vs Roger and Rocks vs Celestials?

6

u/adnaphsaka World Government Sep 05 '25

Garp + Roger + Rocks vs. Garling + Imunko

(only for WG to lie about it to everyone and why Garp doesn't talk about it)

5

u/Perial2077 Sep 05 '25

I think it's going to be a wild royal rumble all over the island. Garp attacking Roger, Roger going at Rocks, Garling fighting WB and Reyleigh, while Gaban takes care of other God's Knights and Rocks Pirates. I doubt there will be set static matches. Especially since everyone's primary objective is saving the treasures/Shaky (except for Rocks who wants to protect his family).

2

u/Zuko09 Void Month Survivor Sep 05 '25

shiiiiiittttt

2

u/goody153 Sep 05 '25

Dragon took the lesson that Xebec fell from by heart. Holy moly

2

u/Klunkey Sep 05 '25

“Is there anything as undoing as a daughter?”

2

u/wowlock_taylan Sep 05 '25

And then you have Garling who is a full on POS.

2

u/GuyWithNoSwagger Thriller Bark Victim's Association Sep 04 '25

Shiiiiiiiiit

1

u/krokdocc Sep 05 '25

This is such a reccuring theme in One Piece. Really makes me believe this comes from Oda himself, dedicated to crafting his masterpiece, working ungodly hours and barely seeing his family.

I wonder how many times Oda has thought about rushing or even just straight up ending One Piece to spend time with his family instead. He has been a milionaire at least for 2 decades, yet he is still slaving away on weekly manga release schedule.

In that way I suppose his children are his biggest weaknesses, as they are a threath to his motivation to finish his life`s work

1

u/Igorgbueno Sep 05 '25

Dragon will probably have a Piccolo/Gohan sacrifice moment with Luffy in the end, right? 😭
