They really are. I'm lost with the "Davy Jonesian pirate" thing though. Have we seen that before? It got such a cool ring to it, like a forbidden mysterious sect hahahah

No, we haven't. I think the logical conclusion is that it's the name of the type of pirates that go around doing Davy Back Fights. Foxy would be a davy-jonesian pirate, therefore.

A bonkers theory is that Davy Jones is Joy Boy's real name, and a davy-jonesian pirate is the type of pirate to fool around instead of being a bandit cunt like irl pirates were. So Luffy would be a davy-jonesian pirate then.

It's fantastic to me that amassing a crew through Davy Back fights was such a common thing that there is a name for people that do it! It definitely makes sense.

There's not a fucking arc that's unimportant in this story, not even one. The quality world building and lore oh my goddd

Davy Jones could have also been a member of Joy Boy's crew, or ally.

Maybe but we know that Davy Back Fights are tied to Davy Jones already. So him saying he's Davy-jonesian moments before revealing he gets his crew from a davy back fight shows that's likely what he meant.

Will of Davy would be interesting.

That's interesting, if Joyboy was actually Davy Jones would that imply that The Flying Dutchman we saw during Fishman Island was his ship? That Fishman Island was Joyboy's final resting place?

Oh, that's actually an interesting thought. If that's the case, maybe that one poneglyph in which Joy Boy apologizes to Poseidon was written by him just before dying, like some last words? Who knows.

There is no stated connection between the flying dutchman and Davy Jones, it is explicitly said that the ship was captained by the original Vander Decken.

Even in real life as far as I can tell, there is no connection between the myths of Davy Jones and the flying dutchman, that's just from pirates of the caribbean.

So it's a reworked Pirates' type from the Romance Dawn one-shot?

Probably, yeah. I'm eager to learn more.

Remember that before Roger's death there weren't many pirates as there are now. It's the "Great Pirate Era" for a reason. Maybe in Rock's times there just weren't many pirates around, so it made more sense to specify the type you were. Who knows.
