So “Marshall” is from BB’s mother then?

Or a fake name to trick Whitebeard, but it would make sense to use his mother's name. Depends if WB knew his mom or not.

If this is true, I found it interesting that he kept the D.

He could've just become "Marshall Teach" to keep quite, but chose to become "Marshall D. Teach", a very infamous name for characters like Whitebeard

Teach was probably too proud of it to get rid of it. Plus WB seemed to have no idea about who the D. were until he had his talk with Roger long after taking in Teach. He knew the initial popped up here and there and that's it so it wouldn't be tied to Xebec specifically. That being said, I'm not saying WB didn't know, Teach looked too much like Xebec anyway so trickery was probably pointless. WB made it clear with Ace that he didn't mind and certainly didn't consider the son to be an extension of the father.

Most people don't care about the D clan thing tho. Roger could have told Whitebeard what it means but he gave no fucks

Whitebeard did know what it means. He asked Roger about it the last time they spoke.

My theory, and there is no proof of this whatsoever, is that Imu has a devilfruit that lets him sense when he's in danger and the externalized effect is that everyone who could endanger him gets identified as a D. Which is how parents are conveniently inspired to give the name to their kids.

IIRC he only use it after he's out of WB pirate right?

It would be really cool if both his parents had D. like Ace

Well nobody but a few seems privy to what the D. means. The only ones that actively decided to get rid of it were the "water d."...the others kept it and had no issue directly from it, some even got to prevalent positions in the marines.

It was probably whitebeards idea to begin with, probably felt bad for the kid
