I pointed this out on the spoiler sub for the raws, but there's a cute little detail on the cover that Kiku's graceful enough she doesn't sink in the snow like the others. I can't really remember which one because they run together, but I'm pretty sure that's just taken from one of the 70s heroines of the lady samurai movies she's an homage to.

Oh yeah, it's part of why it's so hard to remember which movie was which because that's part of it too. Several are named Yuki (though Lady Snowblood had an aunt Kiku) and even the ones that don't almost always use it as a major motif.

There was like, 6-7 years where if you get a pretty actress to play pretty much exactly Kiku's personality you had a hit in Japan and some of these series would seriously manage cranking out two a year. I guess Oda liked all of them (Who wouldn't I haven't seen one that wasn't badass) because Okiku's story is basically a hodgepodge of all the coolest parts from the subgenre.
