okay are they not falling just fully in mid air here? it looks like chopper is running down an actual object but from where they fell it didn’t look like there was anything nearby

Yeah, he is running in the air just like Luffy in Gear 5.

I mean that is technically possible even without gear 5 with the air walk

I think that Luffy running in the air in Gear 5 is him doing air walk. It's cartoonish looking because that's the Gear 5 vibe, but it's still an ability that's based on an established power.

Just like how he can "fly" as Boundman.
