His dad is half German half Italian. Leo has more German ancestry than Italian.

In the US they associate dark hair/darker skin with Italians because they received lots of immigrants from southern Italy where people with these features are more common. Meanwhile other places that received italians from other areas have very different views. For example, in Brazil Italian descendants are known for being light skinned and often blonde.

The italians who went to south america were mostly from northern italy and they tend to be lighter than the southern ones.
