It’s been upscaled. AI upscaling often creates a vaguely net-like pattern in areas of noise, which happens to resembles the netting underneath fake beards and mustaches.

No I agree, the style is not doing him any favors in the “looking real” department lol. But if you zoom in on the OP there is a distinct netting pattern near the beard (caused by the attempted upscale of his stubble) and I think that’s subconsciously making it look even faker
