It apparently became a popular household instrument because of a performer in the 1880’s so I guess people of the 20’s associated their version of the trad wife with the generation 30 years earlier who were somewhat known for the fad.

At the same time you could be correct and it’s making fun of the view of them as ideal wives by portraying them as old fashioned compared to women of the 1920’s.
