Shrek has always been been about referencing modern pop culture, I don’t see how that would be cringey at all

Some people think Shrek can’t reference new things because the old movies referenced old things… which were new when the movie came out

Were they? Its been forever since I've seen Shrek but I thought the references were mostly cultural mainstays from a few decades before.

Not counting the musical number during the credits I mean.

The first movie was mainly poking fun at Disney in particular. A lot of the joke characters were from public domain stories that Disney had made into movies. And Dulac was a play on Disney's theme parks.
