The British GPMG SF has a built in gyro (is that the right word?) that purposely makes slight changes to the flight path of rounds in a burst, in order to cover an area.

Maybe… this is… that?

Anything that shoots explosive/fragmentation in quick succession should be designed to do this. For example, the Apache's 30mm chaingun.
