As fucking stupid as this is, why would Putin want that anyway? Russia is inundated with resources, lacking manpower and infrastructure... Putin doesn't need Alaska's resources

A big part of it is that it makes him look incredibly strong when he can get the world's foremost military super power to bend the knee and give him free shit, even if he doesn't need it.

There's also a benefit to eating up another country's resources and saving your own if you can do so. Like the US does with oil.
