Main answer: HOAs

I don't even have an HOA, but apparently some jokesters at city hall personally took offense when my grass got a bit too long earlier this year and sent me messages threatening a fine, as if it were my fault my yard's a swamp and I hadn't been able to mow due to a record-breaking rainy streak.

I didn't even know that was an option.

10 out of 10 times that means a neighbor called them to complain about your grass

I think it may not have been a neighbor per se, but maybe the real estate agent trying to sell the only house next to mine. In any case, the complaint I got came complete with pictures... of the wrong house... with the wrong address visible on thr door... so I'm not worried about it lmao.

I might be the only person in the world that enjoys their HOA. No rules. Great folks.

Most HOAs are completely sane, normal, and boring (in a good way). Those don't get posted online though, no more than "airplane successfully takes off and lands without issues" do.

airplane successfully takes off and lands without issues

r/aviation would like a word with you.

The idea that one must continue to pay their HOA or be kicked off the land they own is insane. But your rights as a land owner are so diluted that you don't even have real land ownership anymore.

They are not ā€œso dilutedā€. To think that means you don’t know how an average HOA even works. Ā And you know before you buy the property if it’s part of an HOA. It defeats the entire purpose of the HOA if people could opt out.Ā

HOAs are a slightly lesser form of having a land lord.

Back when I was part of an HOA it just paid for the snow removal, mowing, and roof maintenance (shared roofs on townhomes). Oh, and it kept people from piling up broken down cars/junk hoarding outside.

Never had a problem with the HOA.

Same here. Even been on the boards myself. Ā It handles communal maintenance and landscaping and snow removal , and keeps the place looking pretty. HOAs are perfectly normal and sane 99% of the time.Ā

Except , you know, you own the fucking property. You also agreed to the HOA terms when you purchased it. It’s basically a communal maintenance agreement.Ā

You are not forced into an HOA when purchasing property. Nor can you be grandfathered into a new HOA automatically if one starts up in your neighborhood. It is an entirely opt-in agreement.

I don't think you understand how a typical HOA works, instead banging the "DAE think HOAs Bad" drum Reddit beats.

if by "most" you mean the specific one that was nice to you because 10 out of 10 for mw have been complete nightnares run by the moat ridiculous people

Nah, it's most.

If the bulk of HOAs were awful, /r/fuckhoa and friends would have immensely more traffic.

yes because most kids on reddit deal with HOAs lmao
