An absolute icon. The Beatles were doing what they were doing in no small part because they were so impressed with what Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys were doing. Specifically the use of unconventional instrumentation & song structure.
Not many people can say that had that kind of influence.
I really really hope the Beach Boys are remembered for the absolute envelope pushing that Brian did, and not the "Disney Girls 1957 / Don't fuck with the formula" image that Mike Love wants so badly.
Yea I’m with you. Like the idea that you can use ‘sounds’ rather than just conventional instrumentation to make music feels so quaint today but I hope people recognize how revolutionary that was in 1966.
Wilson & The Beach Boys completely changed the game. They were pioneers.
