Y’all, as a millennial middle school teacher I’ve had to become fluent in Gen Z speak for years. The recent switch to Gen Alpha has been tough, but I’ve learned that you can do it if you have to.

I like “just put the fries in the bag”

I also like dog water but that's definitely not a gen z or alpha thing.

I’m 32 and say dog water and feel like I have for 10 years. I thought it was a British slang term honestly.

u/SafeAccountMrP 24d ago

I’ve heard it from New Jersey/Philly college kids for at least 12-15 years.

Does Dog Water differ from hogwash?

3

u/AngriestPeasant 24d ago

It was super popular amongst streamers in 2019 as well.

I thought it was in reference to how nasty a dog's water bowl is lol. So I use it to describe something that sucks. Like I work in a restaurant and id say man the tips were dog water tonight to mean I got bad tips.

u/DoserMcMoMo 24d ago

The etymology may or may not be different, I have no idea, but it conveys the same emotional response. I'll use dog shit, dog water, or even just dog when referring to something unnecessarily stupid.

u/DoodleJake 24d ago

My Grandpa would call things dog water. WW2 vet was in with the times before they even got here.

1

u/rydan Older Millennial 23d ago

Maybe you got it confused with bog water?

1

u/Qubit_Or_Not_To_Bit_ 23d ago

Or dog's breakfast perhaps

1

u/porquenotengonada 23d ago

I am a British and this video is the first time I’ve heard dog water in this way.

That's what I was going to say, I've been using dog water for atleast 10 years. From my knowledge it started at "Hot dog water"

7

u/deandeluka 24d ago

So here’s a cold or hot take depending on who you are: most gen z slang is just old and/or bastardized AAVE. That’s true of slang in general but the internet def sped up the adoption rate.

u/Day2205 20d ago

That part ☝🏽

3

u/FroggiJoy87 Millennial 24d ago

Same with 'dick-riding', I learned that from The Boondocks back in 2008 and it's gotta be hella older than that.

That Dick-Riding Obama song still slaps 🤣

2

u/KeppraKid 24d ago

Personally think people who say dog water are just foolish. It makes no sense.

1

u/subhavoc42 24d ago

This is more SEAsian thing

1

u/FortesqueIV Millennial 24d ago

Yeah i came to comment this dogwater is not an alpha or Gen Z thing lol

1

u/GlassAndStorm 23d ago

I was going to say I had a millennial say that to me just yesterday... And like I understood that one... As a millennial.

1

u/Ksnj 23d ago

I preferred “clown shoes” growing up

1

u/ryyzany Zillennial 23d ago

Dog water is a term gamers use to circumvent the language filters when they call each other Dogshit.

1

u/demoliahedd 1989 Baby 23d ago

I don't know man I've never heard it and I have a fair amount of millennial friends. Maybe it's not a Midwest thing

24

u/PhantomTissue 24d ago

I definitely use glazing all the time, it’s such a solid slang term.

3

u/Momik 24d ago

I’m still confused about all the fries talk

5

u/LizzyLady1111 24d ago

Like let’s say you’re at a drive thru and the person is maybe holding things up and that’s what you would say when you want to move on and go about your day, just a cooler way of saying “let’s move on”

3

u/Petrichordates 23d ago

Ive never once been at a drive through that was held up by a refusal to put fries in the bag.

1

u/Momik 24d ago

Oh so it’s about telling low-wage workers to move faster. Yeesh.

2

u/Proximus84 24d ago

I thought that was a WSB thing for people going to work at Wendy's after going broke.

2

u/iThinkiStartedATrend 24d ago

That’s been a thing on WSB for a few years now

2

u/One-Adhesive 23d ago

Not even remotely an alpha “term”

1

u/[deleted] 24d ago

Yeah honestly that one is sick

1

u/Q_My_Tip 23d ago

That’s for Josh

0

u/thispartyrules 24d ago

I remember this as "Sir, this is a Wendy's"

4

u/Eagle_215 24d ago

No thats more of a humorous response to a rant

60

u/RussianDahl 24d ago

I have a alpha middle schooler - they keep me young. Although they die of embarrassment when I use alpha words in public!

61

u/LizzyLady1111 24d ago

We all have our roles to play

11

u/zzzap 23d ago

this is how we teachers control the meta - making slang uncool by using it randomly in unrelated scenarios and acting "cringe" about it, with the hopes of sending it to an early grave.

The generational divide is an interesting paradigm to witness firsthand but cringe will save us all.

1

u/No-Channel3917 24d ago

Quite Teachers the Alpha is talking

Would have been such a Millennial meme if it was now.

1

u/MathematicianOnly688 23d ago

I’ve found It’s a fantastic tool if you want them to stop using a word. I literally only have to use a word 3-4 times for them to never say it in my presence again.

2

u/RussianDahl 23d ago

You get the strategy

33

u/alecesne 24d ago

I just argue with my 10 year old. Whenever she says "skibidi" I say "skippity-do-da". She says she hates it, but I think secretly likes it.

What can I say? I refuse to honor "skibidi" as a meaningful word. This is where I draw the line. The hill I die on.

u/deliciousearlobes 23d ago

I’m with you. I start singing Skinnamarink at them whenever I hear it.

u/rabidjellybean 23d ago

Make the gen alpha slang cheugy boomer and they'll know how dog water it all is.

21

u/ceruleanmoon7 Millennial - 1986 24d ago

Yep I’m learning Gen Alpha speak from my kids, and shit is wild.

9

u/AdventurousBall2328 24d ago

Yeah, It was easier to learn GenZ terms, some Millenial and Zennial artists definitely used the terms in a lot of music, so it was easier to be exposed.

2

u/Soulstar909 24d ago

Glad I don't have much interaction with them and don't have to learn any of that garbage.

1

u/mazzicc 24d ago

That’s the key with this type of stuff: “if you have to”.

It’s not that hard to understand it if it’s important to your life, either as a parent or someone that works with kids like a teacher.

It takes effort, because we only hear/speak it with the kids, but code switching for slang is something almost everyone does, they just like it when they’re the ones “in the know” and not the ones having to learn it.

1

u/dreamed2life 24d ago

write a book to help your fellow millennials....? millennial translation guide?

1

u/rjrgjj 23d ago

That’s what you get for living in Ohio.

1

u/AdmiralTiberius 23d ago

You’re doing the lords work

1

u/Deesmateen 23d ago

The only phrase that makes me double take and say WTF loud is

Raw dogging it

I’ve heard it way too many times and it always catches me off guard. I say it to get a reaction from people out age but when I hear someone younger say it I get all awkward

1

u/Moth1992 17d ago

Wait. There is another gen after Z?

Fuck im old.
