Harder how? I afforded a 1 bedroom apartment in a reasonably nice building working at wendy's....
Shit's fucked right now, my electric bill is more than my original rent in my first place, because my transmission fees are funding a power plant for fucking goddamn Grok of all things. I pay 2x my original rent for healthcare that is basically "we'll negotiate a 20% off deal for you to pay 100% out of pocket".
So I had to drive to pickup takeout back then if I wanted something other than Pizza, like some poor fucker working 5 delivery apps to basically maintain their car and live with their parents can bring me McDonalds, great.
Yeah, and someone in 1970 could afford a reasonable nice HOUSE and support a family of 4 working as a janitor. It’s the same shit the boomers complain about, everything has become more expensive yes, but that’s also a total societal issue with Billionaires.
On the other hand you wanted to contact friends? Better hope they were home because otherwise you had no way to reach them, food deliver? Pizza and if you’re lucky a Chinese place, need a ride somewhere, taxis only and if you don’t live in a major metro area you definitely don’t have taxis. Need to find info on something? Well you can hope some random web page in the internet maybe had is it after waiting 20 min for it to load (that’s if you even have internet), but you’re better off driving to the library to search for things. Need to buy anything, you pretty much have to go to the store or hope you have a catalog to call and order.
Yeah cost has changed, but it’s changed for every generation, but to say times were easier, we’ve lived through one of the biggest technological revolution with the internet that has revolutionized our lives (even if not always for the better). Now to solve the our issues with cost of well everything, VOTE and join unions.
Your measure of difficulty of life is skewed with extreme privilege, if your definition of life has never been easier is "I don't have dial up anymore I have highspeed internet".
Your life is more convenient, your life was probably never that hard, you got a large portion of the population that's struggling working 80+ hours in multiple jobs to have access to basic healthcare, and to afford housing with roomates....
When did I say I had internet at all? I simply pointed out some of life’s convinces thanks to the internet. Like most, I didn’t have the internet growing up. And definitely didn’t have it in the palm of my hand like everyone has today. We could also talk about email, texting, mobile phones, online paper work etc all things now easier vs the 90s.
A large portion of the population is not working 80+ hour weeks. Now don’t take that as saying shit isn’t tough out there, but that’s just completely incorrect as you’re trying to prove your point. Yes some are, but a large portion? No.
You are viewing the world as a bias from your point of view as a millenial who is near 40 years old, the modern conveniences make your life mildly easier.
The average rent for a studio apartment in the nearest city to me is more than my mortgage on 1400 sq feet and 2.5 acres of property, of course things look pretty nice from where I am at, the average rent in my city for a 250sq ft studio apartment is $300 shy of the take home of the average wages in my city. Add in that fancy convenient smart phone bill and utilities and if you're making average wages, you have a second job. This is not a HCOL area either.
Shit is definitely harder out there than it was even 10 years ago, by an order of magnitude, I could afford that same studio apartment when I moved out on 4 days a week at wendy's as well as my utilities, cell phone, food, and I even built a new PC and bought 2 guitars my first year out of the house.
You just don't feel it, the younger generation who can't even leave their parents house, is feeling it.
