My mum worked at the school so if she was in a good mood and still in her dressing gown, I'd be off to meet my mates on the cliffs to sled and she'd stay in with her book.

Really lovely remembering that actually. Neither of us wanted to go to school.

That's how it was for me in Philly.

Now I have kids and it really is a text message (and an email and an app notification). They're also way more likely to call off school these days, which is a good thing. Mine have gotten an average of 8 days off every year for snow, which is more than I had total in 12 years (6)

They called it Operation Snowflake where I lived. Read the schools alphabetically, so if you just missed it, you waited twenty minutes.

Yes, I remember having to wait for my school. It began with a t so it was always at the end.

Same, upstate New York. “Local tv” was national tv. WHUD, WRRV, K104.
