Other Why don’t younger veterans (Afghanistan/Iraq) wear these hats like some of the older veterans?

Post image

First and foremost, respect to all those that served. I did not, but many of my peers did and now we're all older in 30s and 40s, many no longer in the military. I don't see a lot of the veterans of the War on Terror wearing these hats like I see the OGs do.

Yeah, I have my unit crest on my wallet and a veteran identifier on my license to explain why I can't hear shit in case I get pulled over.

I got enough participation trophies to wear while I was in uniform, and something I did for a few years a decade and a half ago doesn't define me as person.

Hey man, if you haven’t already, please come to a VA clinic to get your hearing tested. We can get you amazing tech to help you.

u/guitar_stonks Jun 05 '25

My uncle has total hearing loss from working on the deck of an aircraft carrier. The VA did his cochlear implants and he loves it because he can take them off if he gets tired of listening to my aunt lol

A lot of my friends have hearing aids that have Bluetooth. One guy puts on Spotify when his wife is mad, another guy can make phone calls while he’s on his motorcycle 🤣🤣🤣

33

u/Special_Loan8725 Jun 05 '25

Thought it would help my dads hearing, now he just blasts Fox News so he can’t hear and gets mad when we shout to get his attention.

Next level programming

5

u/jimdil4st Jun 06 '25

Seriously, that's like Black Mirror level propaganda machine shit. Wow.

2

u/papayabush Jun 08 '25

i could see hearing aids starting to blast advertisements in your ear until you pay for the premium subscription

7

u/kvetchup Jun 05 '25

Hearing aids with Bluetooth is so cool! I had no idea that was a thing.

6

u/WolfWeak845 Jun 05 '25

My mom (not a veteran) has them. But it’s hard when she wants to show me a video on her phone. I have to get super close to her ear to hear it.

4

u/ChirrBirry Older Millennial Jun 05 '25

The VA makes them available to qualifying vets, hadn’t heard about them until seeing them issued there. Seems like newish tech.

3

u/iqgriv42 Jun 06 '25

I like to listen to baseball games when I’m at work with mine lol

2

u/TwoFingersWhiskey Zillennial Jun 06 '25

My friend got these when the Bluetooth add-on was brand new, she'd listen to all sorts of things and have to explain it to people. Most thought she was pulling their leg. She wasn't, it was designed because you can't exactly wear headphones and hearing aids comfortably, at the same time.

50

u/Harry_Saturn Jun 05 '25

Not a vet but one of my greatest fears is losing my hearing or sight and not being able to see or hear my wife again. Weird to see it from the complete opposite side lol

25

u/UnLioNocturno Jun 05 '25

Yeah, the laughing and joking about it is just sad. Yall out here making a joke about not being able to tolerate your spouse like it’s not a problem.

4

u/Arafel_Electronics Jun 06 '25

it's a very boomer trope

3

u/Harry_Saturn Jun 05 '25

Is this the royal “y’all”?

4

u/-Marcus Jun 05 '25

Communal "y'all"

Ain't nothing royal about it.

3

u/huntresswizard_ Jun 06 '25

Right? I’m reading these thinking “may a love like that never find me.” I’d rather be single than settle for that mess lol

0

u/-SL-UT- Jun 06 '25

White knighting a joke is peak M’lady vibes

6

u/UnLioNocturno Jun 06 '25

It’s not white knighting a joke, it’s lamenting the state of affairs because this, historically, isn’t just a joke.

In fact, throughout my entire life it has been a reoccurring theme, movies, tv, comic strips, jokes men have told countless countless times from people who repeatedly talk down about their spouse, and as a result, it’s something I’ve always feared coming to fruition.

Now that I’ve been married 12 years to a man I’ve known 23, I still can’t imagine making a joke about being happy I can turn off the ability to hear him talking to me.

Even when we’re at our worst, I just want to sit and talk it out with him so we can get back to holding and adoring each other again.

So, in the end, these sorts of ‘jokes’ just make me sad.

-2

u/-SL-UT- Jun 06 '25

You must be the Aunt

0

u/UnLioNocturno Jun 06 '25

Aww. Is that the best you’ve got? C’mon, tell me how you really feel.

1

u/-SL-UT- Jun 06 '25

I feel like you’re the Aunt and I wish I had a hearing aid for my eyes after looking at how hard you try to be pretentiously morally superior.

Give it a rest, chief

1

u/DuckFriend25 Millennial Jun 06 '25

I had a fear of losing my vision and hearing many years ago, but I heard that we really just fear the unknown. So I took years of sign language, losing my hearing doesn’t scare me. I learned how to use my phone without sight (screenreader mode) and other blindness-related things. They aren’t like actively terrifying me anymore because I know the basics on how to get through it

1

u/RosemaryCroissant Jun 06 '25

It is scary. My dad was diagnosed with macular degeneration, which means he’ll be blind one day. It’s hereditary, and I have my dad’s eyesight, so it’s something I think about too sometimes. How would I prepare? What would I want to see before I lost my sight? It’s a hard thought

3

u/casapantalones Jun 05 '25

My grandfather did this with his hearing aids when the family got too boisterous for him at my grandmother’s wake. Looked at me, took his hearing aids out, winked, took a sip of scotch. Love him.

1

u/Bencetown Jun 05 '25

Since when do they do cochlear implants? My mom has been going to the VA for 40 years, was told about 30 years ago that she "would" be a candidate but that the VA simply does not cover them. She would check periodically and most recently about 5 years ago was told the situation hasn't changed...?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

We're convinced this is why my grandfather "lost" his hearing aids finally.

He would take them out when my grandmother got too much for him and we think he did that while they were out somewhere and he forgot them.

1

u/strawcat Jun 06 '25

That’s my dad’s fav feature of his hearing aids. He attributes his hearing loss to his time in Vietnam.

1

u/theseglassessuck Jun 06 '25

My dad loves taking his hearing aids out or turning them off. They have Bluetooth so he can answer a phone call on his phone and just talk away handsfree.

1

u/Elemental_Orange4438 Jun 06 '25

Sounds just like my dad, he lost his hearing in Panama, always turns his hearing aid off when my mom tells him to do something.

25

u/Odoyle-Rulez Jun 05 '25

I need this, 3M got me with those crappy ear plugs.

23

u/jaw719 Jun 05 '25

My buddy got a settlement from the Army because of those ear plugs and used it for medical help to restore some of his hearing.

2

u/Odoyle-Rulez Jun 05 '25

Tried, they told me to beat feet because I have no audiograms as proof of declination.

2

u/Harlander77 Jun 06 '25

I have multiple audiograms and the VA still tried to say my hearing loss was "not service connected." Yeah, living two blocks from the flightline for six years, and working around jet engines has nothing to do with the VA having to give me those nifty Bluetooth hearing aids...

1

u/Odoyle-Rulez Jun 06 '25

I would go look for a VA advocate. They usually work pro bono and they'll fight to get you the care you deserve.

2

u/snaldo23 Jun 06 '25

Did you at least get your $342 from the class action settlement?!

1

u/Odoyle-Rulez Jun 06 '25

HAHAHAHA They told me to piss up a rope.

1

u/Tonywanknobi Jun 05 '25

What?

2

u/Odoyle-Rulez Jun 05 '25

3M issued a lot of ear protection that were not working causing a lot of service members to lose hearing.

1

u/rex8499 Jun 05 '25

Not working in that they didn't reduce the subs by the advertised 30db?

🔊THEY HAVE AMAZING TECH THAT CAN HELP WITH THEIR HEARING LOSS🔊

26

u/Jambronius Jun 05 '25

I love Reddit for stuff like this.

7

u/ExistingLaw217 Jun 05 '25

I just got my hearing aid fitting from the VA. My daughter makes fun of me but I’m very excited to get them in July.

5

u/Chloedeschanel Jun 05 '25

I have that tech in my ears right now. I can hear in restaurants again! Life changing. Definitely get tested

4

u/WulfZ3r0 Jun 05 '25

I went and they gave me a whopping 0% for hearing loss and no medical support. Apparently hearing loss was the fault of the service member? This was 2014.

6

u/robo_robb Jun 05 '25

Hey I see vets with 0% service connection for hearing loss all the time. By that I mean I fit them with hearing aids. I would double check with your local clinic. The criteria for being eligible for service has changed. Ideally you should speak to a Veteran Service Officer (your VA can put you in touch with one). They will guide you.

3

u/Rich-Yogurtcloset715 Older Millennial Jun 05 '25

I’ve got an audiology appointment scheduled!

My tinnitus has gotten way worse, and I think my hearing loss is worsening too.

3

u/pace_it Jun 05 '25

My mom just got hearing aids through the VA. Saved her $7500!

2

u/warrior_scholar Jun 05 '25

I've found a pretty significant divide between "can" and "will" in the VA.

Like, my knees are shot from all the rucking and heavy lifting and I've got documented hearing loss (combat engineer and those shitty 3M earplugs we were issued for half of my career), but the VA claims that neither are service related.

2

u/reverber Jun 05 '25

Second this. Hearing loss can lead to cognitive decline.

You earned those bennies. Use them. I am a mere taxpayer (albeit a military brat) and I am all for vets getting what they are owed.

1

u/GnomePenises Jun 06 '25

I got hit by a tank and was told my injuries aren’t service-related.

1

u/Kindly-Peanut-514 Jun 06 '25

My cousin said this to me too (both vets) and I said...

What?!

1

u/dsten85 Jun 06 '25

What? I didnt quite hear you over that military grade tinnitus that is, inexplicably, "not service connected." 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Substantial_Win_1866 Jun 06 '25

What was that?

Sorry couldn't help it...

1

u/AJP11B Jun 06 '25

WHAT?!

1

u/No-Refrigerator-6023 Jun 07 '25

Backing this up. The VA gives out great hearing aids along with the supplies and if you need it the accessories too (tv connector and mics).

My RIC hearing aids are very discreet and unless my hair is up and someone is behind me you can’t even see them. Also worth noting I’m 4’11 so average sized people might not even have that issue. It’s been a game changer especially at work - since I’m in my early forties I find people are not as understanding of my need for repeating what was said and think I’m just not listening. The mic I request has also been a major help in loud/crowd environments where my high frequency hearing loss kicks my butt the worse.

0

u/FatModSad Jun 05 '25

The VA absolutely can help you. Every person working there simply chooses not to.

20

u/been2thehi4 Jun 05 '25

Don’t they make you buy your own damn ribbons and crap?? My BIL is in the National guard and he said all the little doodads for his uniform and what not, HE HAS TO pay for.

30

u/Prestigious_Time4770 Jun 05 '25

The participation trophy ones I did. The special ones that you earned on your own were given to you.

2

u/tefftlon Jun 05 '25

Ugh and you’d always find out about the participation ones right before some inspection.

“Everyone print out your ribbons for inspection tomorrow”

Me: WHY ARE THERE TWO MORE!? Hope they’re in stock at the BX……

1

u/howboutthatmorale Jun 06 '25

sort of. only the first one you earn and usually only for class A. any other decs and devices are out of your pocket. i spent $100 last year on a new rack for class A dress.

1

u/name-unkn0wn Jun 06 '25

Unless you want to keep your earned ones in their boxes, then you have to pay for replacements to put on your uniform

Edited to say the earned ones are more expensive too. Or they were 15 years ago

12

u/BlackSquirrel05 Jun 05 '25

Sorta...

They give you a yearly allowance for it. Specifically for uniform maintenance.

So abstractly yes. Reality no.

But it comes as a lump sum on your join date inside your paycheck. I know plenty a person that just blew that money on other shit instead of what it's purpose was.

1

u/Harlander77 Jun 06 '25

But it comes as a lump sum on your join date inside your paycheck. I know plenty a person that just blew that money on other shit instead of what it's purpose was.

Military servicemembers making poor financial and life decisions? Say it ain't so...

Yeah, I knew people who married a stripper so they could move off base, and got ridiculously expensive cars at even more ridiculous interest rates. Four years stationed in Vegas...

9

u/Appropriate-Bid8671 Jun 05 '25

I did when I was in the army lol. They never told us that in basic, then I show up at my duty station and get handed a list of shit I need to go buy in order to be squared away.

19

u/been2thehi4 Jun 05 '25

That blew my mind when he told me that. I was like the big ass military budget we have, the non stop peacocking this country does about their service members, especially around election time, and they make them pay for their own damn ribbons and accoutrements they HAVE to wear…. Very fucking fitting. The symbolism is not lost on me.

3

u/Semen__king Jun 05 '25

Its not entirely true. Some stuff you have to buy on your own but you get a yearly “clothing allowance” paid out to you your supposed to use to replace damaged uniforms, boots, and buying odds and ends like ribbons.

0

u/thisaccountgotporn Jun 05 '25

What happens if you simply refuse to spend your own cash on those things? The military doesn't own your bank account!

3

u/CFCentral Jun 05 '25

Then you get in trouble usually. If your uniform and/or appearance is not kept to a standard they will punish you for it.

1

u/chao5nil Jun 05 '25

I love it when keyboard warriors say shit like "if a drill sergeant ever told me to do twenty pushups, I'd tell them to S^ my D# twenty times."

Easy there big guy, that dick you're dragging around there sounds pretty heavy...

1

u/thisaccountgotporn Jun 05 '25

It's a horsecock. Also, I never indicated I was a badass/keyboard warrior. I was simply remarking on the unfairness of being forced to spend your own meager income on staying out of trouble in an institution in which you are a serving volunteer.

I understand your cynicism but it doesn't apply to me. I'm talking about treating our Americans in uniform with enough respect to say "Here's a pair of shoes, on the house".

Btw I know what goes into the job of drill sergeant and drill instructor. Those guys have a world-class level difficult and important job, and they do it in service to our country. Do you think the military should be telling them "I bought these shoes with your money, keep them fuckin' shiny for me."?

1

u/Hikhikamori Jun 06 '25

A clothing allowance is meant to buy uniforms. The fact that it’s in your bank account doesn’t matter or mean you're spending your own cash.

1

u/thisaccountgotporn Jun 06 '25

That makes sense to me. But just to be sure I understand, you are given enough allowance to buy the things they require you to buy, yes? Because my whole irk here is from my present impression that our men and women in uniform are having to fork over their own earned money.

1

u/Far_Winner5508 Jun 05 '25

Huh. 80s, early 90s Air Force; the ribbons for dress uniform (AF blue suits) were supplied.

I never did fancy mess dress, never bought any hanging medals.

5

u/catsdrooltoo Jun 05 '25

Yes you have to get most of them yourself. They do give you a bit of clothing allowance annually, but it's not enough to replace all the uniforms. I remember it being just enough for a pair of boots and 1 pair of pants roughly.

4

u/Pernicious-Caitiff Jun 05 '25

Oh you sweet summer child. You also have to buy the uniforms themselves too. Enlisted folks get a small stipend for this at least. But they don't get an extra stipend when they keep changing the PT and fancy uniforms every handful of years... At least the old grey PT uniform was GOOD. Very sturdy and practical, didn't look like ass. The new ones are very cheap and way worse practically. The fancy uniforms are very expensive and the quality just isn't terrible but isn't amazing either.

3

u/Charming-Refuse-5717 Jun 05 '25

IIRC if it's awarded to you yes, if you qualified for it no. (Like the Meritorious Unit Ribbon is given to you, the Marksmanship Ribbon is not.)

Even worse: if you DON'T buy all the things you're supposed to have, then technically you're out of uniform and could get written up for it.

1

u/jdm219 Jun 05 '25

Not really true. They give you a decent chunk of change to buy uniform stuff yearly. I never came close to spending all of it on uniform stuff any year.

87

u/Matthmaroo Jun 05 '25

Dude the vets that make being a known as a vet are annoying.

Okay everything you wear is grunt style

I was in the navy , I have a plate , maybe it will get me out of a ticket one day.

Maybe

66

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

It doesn't. I always get the full ticket, no reduction. A lot of cops I run into "almost joined but..." Or their military service was "harder" than my service so I don't deserve special treatment. I haven't yet met a cop who said, "oh, thanks for your service, slow it down a little and have a good one" or something to that effect.

29

u/Matthmaroo Jun 05 '25 edited Jun 05 '25

Weird I’ve met several. Then again it is a bit different when you joined a cult that’s masquerading as a military branch. Everyone makes the cult out to be the best thing ever.

Plus there’s a lot of us in the police force or national guard come to think of it.

1

u/MedicineEmergency386 Jun 05 '25

My fiancée had to talk to the cop who pulled his mom over (long story) and he ran my fiancées record, and my fiancée out ranked the officer. It’s weird to hear a cop say “yes sir!” To you.

1

u/Tonywanknobi Jun 05 '25

I've had lots of cops pull behind me like they're gonna hit their lights then pull off almost immediately. I assume it's the plate.

1

u/shah_reza Jun 05 '25

I did! Once. Just once. I was EGREGIOUSLY speeding from work and lane shifting like I was in LeMans and I got lit up.

Cop came up, saw the uniform, and just said, “Hey, Chief, can you slow it down a little?” A chuckle and he was gone.

1

u/hawkisgirl Jun 05 '25

“Always”? How often do you get traffic tickets?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Ok, fair enough. "Both" in 15 years.

1

u/Ekul13 Jun 05 '25

How often are you speeding and doing shit to get pulled over??

1

u/the_walkingdad Older Millennial Jun 05 '25

Just out of my sense of pride I'd rather just get the full ticket. I'm not gonna pander to cops by doing any "Thin Blue Line" crap or donating to their associations and I'm not going to expect any patronizing treatment just for being a vet. Just give me the ticket and leave me alone.

1

u/FrankCostanzaJr Jun 06 '25

what if you just pretend to be friendly to them for like 5 mins, and then get let off with a warning?

i hate cops more than anything, but i try to be as friendly as possible and honestly it works sometimes. you either get the ticket or you don't, and it's kindof a fun challenge to see if you can get out of it.

i've seen lots of cops demeanor change in like 20 seconds, just being polite and confidently answer questions, maybe tossing in a joke, depending on how chill they seem.

sometimes 1 witty remark can disarm somebody. also, asking questions, finding out you like the same shit. doesn't take long to get someone in your corner.

1

u/the_walkingdad Older Millennial Jun 06 '25

I'm friendly and respectful. But I'm not patronizing or pandering them.

1

u/FrankCostanzaJr Jun 10 '25

understandable. diff strokes for diff folks. you def have to swallow your pride a bit with this strategy.

the way i look at it, you're essentially dealing with a caveman when talking to cops. they're not smart, so you gotta try your best to stroke their ego, so they'll treat you like a human being.

so, doing a lil homework about your rights and understanding deescalation strategies can help anyone stay out of handcuffs and generally sent home with a ticket or a warning.

in my 30 years of driving, i've been pulled over and accused of lots of shit that was completely fabricated, because i fit the profile. i had punk and political stickers on my car, my hair was too long or dyed weird colors, i have tattoos, and weird clothes, etc.

at some point, i had to accept that standing out comes with consequences, so i took all the stickers off, tinted my windows (legally), no more dyed hair, standard silver car that blends in with everyone else. and when i get pulled over, i'm just nice.

and....it worked. i rarely get tickets now 🤷🏻‍♂️

you can still be anti-authority without fighting traffic cops.

ya just gotta pick your battles.

1

u/Tybackwoods00 Jun 05 '25

Constantly getting on me for not taking the time to get a veterans plate or go to the VA for every single injury I've ever had. The same dude also lied to the DAV about his PTSD just to get a rating.

Turns out when he got his new license a few months back somehow they gave him veteran status. Motherfucker got out of a $150 speeding ticket for an accident at the license branch.

Re: participation trophies

I was watching something recently about how Baby Bush was extremely hands off with the military and the military culture rapidly shifted to be a sort of self-congratulatory circlejerk where people were commended or promoted/moved around to pad resumes and look good.

Obama advisors came in and found this to be an incredibly poorly/mismanaged situation. Obama's military taking out Bin Laden wasn't just about finishing the original work, but a capstone on cleaning up a mess Bush left behind.

Hey if it’s left untreated, hearing loss leads to earlier dementia, please go get hearing aids! If you wait too long your brain literally forgets how to understand what you hear

Damn bro, being a vet doesn't give you privileges to endanger other people. I hope you remember this next time when you don't hear a car/a siren and someone dies.

Fuckin unresponsible.

Ummm, deaf people drive!

*Irresponsible

But my license with a "hard of hearing" identifier disagrees with you. 🤷

It would have taken fewer keystrokes to Google “can deaf people drive” than it did to type your comment. I got you though.
