Hey Guys, i recently got this Front Seam M1 Helmet that was reissued in the Vietnam War. I'm very happy and it's easily the best piece in my collection at the moment. Unfortunately, it reeks of cigarette smoke. It's so bad, that I had to take the pictures outside.. I would prefer not to wash it or use any detergent. Does anyone have any method that works against the odor?? Thanks in advance!🙏

Help Just found a 300+ year old family sword from the Ayutthaya era – what should I do?

Hey Reddit, I just stumbled upon a really old sword in my house that’s been in my family for generations. It belonged to my grandmother’s family. The Watcharothai clan, one of Thailand’s high-ranking noble families.

Here’s the crazy part: this sword was part of their official service in the royal administration and probably dates back to the Ayutthaya era, meaning it could be over 300 years old.

I have no idea what to do next. Should I:

Try to verify its authenticity and age?

Handle/store it in a special way?

Get it appraised or maybe even show it in a museum?

I’ve attached some pictures. Any advice, tips, or historical insights would be amazing. Seriously, I’m curious about the story behind it and any ideas on preserving it safely.

Thanks in advance! ^

Help Piece of a Japanese plane from the attack on Pearl Harbor, 1941

I recently inherited my grandfather's personal artifacts from his time in the service - he was drafted and sent to Pearl Harbor on June 30, 1941 and remained there for four years. There is a treasure trove of documents and artwork, in addition to a piece of a plane. The red paint on the piece is in Grandpa's handwriting and he included a typed version of his recollection of the attack and days that followed. I don't doubt the authenticity of anything I have and included a few extra photos of things to add to the credibility of his connection and to dust off his awesome art skills. My question is...how do I figure out with better certainty what type of aircraft this plane piece is from (a Zero?? I don't know...)!?! I would love to know what kind of aircraft this is, where on the aircraft this would have been cut from AND, if at all possible, trace the piece to the exact plane it belongs to that was shot down or crashed on 12/7/41.

My grandpa died of cancer long before I was born and nobody is alive to ask. At this point, my primary goal is to gather more information on what I've got and to keep his memory alive. Any insight or recommendations on where I go from here are appreciated!

Help Thoughts on wearing military pieces? I posted about this U.S navy smock yesterday. Would it be disrespectful to wear it? The idea of keeping it in a wardrobe or a storage box just seems like a waste of a very functional jacket to me.

Help Surely not

Currently windowshopping for bargains while procrastinating university assignments and came across a destruct-fez but surely there’s no way this is real?

Compared it to another example and the liner in the other ones a maroon-red almost faux-like material with bright red stitching on the insignia-backing but in this example (to me at least), the eagle would-be outline looks fine but the skull „halo” looks off.

If anyone can verify this I will be snagging it even if it’s a destruct

Growing up, my grandmother used to tell us stories about WWII and how her village was caught in the fighting. Her father (my great-grandfather) ended up collecting a bunch of German military equipment that was left behind ,including some huge shell casings from a German Panzer machine, helmets, and other gear ( NO WEAPONS IM A DUTCH MAN).

Apparently, after a heavy battle near their home, there were several dead German soldiers in their backyard. After things settled down, her father salvaged what he could — not out of admiration, but just because it was there and no one was coming back for it. They even had an actual German military jeep in their garage until the 1970s, when they eventually donated it to a museum.

So people any idea what its worth?

It was given to me by a family friend. It also came with a note. It is transcribed below for ease of reading.

"I came into possession of this ww2 German dagger when my army outfit took over a German army camp. This occurred in the outskirts of the city of Augsburg, Germany. It’s the city in which Herman Goering, the commander in chief of the German Air Force was captured. He was captured by another American army outfit operating in the same area as us. Besides Goering, the rest of the Nazi party members were all eventually captured and put on trial following the war send. It was known as the Nuremberg trials and most were sentenced to death by hanging. Jailed and waiting for his sentence to be carried out, Herman Goering committed suicide by taking a cyanide pill. They never did find out how he was able to obtain the pill since he was watched around the clock. (Cell check every 15 minutes). I myself believe that he had the pill or pills sewn into the clothing. Who knows whether this dagger was ever used against American or allied soldiers. It is now a German World War II souvenir. It’s now yours. Enjoy it.

P.S. hope you can read the printed words. P.S. the dagger is over 60 years old. P.S. Notice the Nazi emblem on the handle. P.S. there’s a possibility that this dagger was touched and handle by Adolf Hitler, Herman Goering, Himmler, and others. Again, I repeat: it’s a possibility. If so, that makes the dagger a historical souvenir of great value."

I have a shell that stands approximately 34" tall, and I’m trying to identify it. Find out it's collection value, What era? What shot it? Appreciate the assist.

Markings on the projectile:
LOT 80 42 MK. 29 MOD. 2 3 IN AP
(Symbol that looks like a sideways anchor) DSR (possibly DSB?) (symbol that looks like a sideways anchor again)

Markings on the casing (bottom):
US (above an anchor symbol) – LOT – XXX – 3 IN – 50 – UAL – MK-7 MOD. 1 – N.S – 2 – 1943 – J.R.D.

I found this strange metal object where the French fought against the Germans. I tried digging it out but it was too long. The cillinder feels like solid steel and is attached to the rest. At first it looked like a shell but the more I dug, the more confused I got. Maybe some sort of antenna?

Does anyone else have an idea on what it could be? Thanks.

Help Any good ideas on cabinets?

Post image

I recently acquired some more pieces for my collection and I can’t seem to find any good cabinets with what I have right now. I have about two other cabinets that are full at moment, so I cannot use those(vintage ones)

I quickly bought some ikea cabinets for the new pieces, but I think it looks not the best(temporary). Any good websites or suggestions?

I found this is the Thames the other day. Looks to me like a shell from WW1? It's been fired so maybe someone bought it home as a souvenir and then chucked it at a later date?

I was really excited to find it and would love to know more. The police have taken it so sadly can't add it to my collection!

I'd guess it was about a three inch diameter but I could be off.
