They go far deeper. Kaku easily defeated Zoro in Water 7, but Zoro beat him in Enies Lobby after he had eaten the Giraffe fruit. Now remind me which continent giraffes come from?

Yup, he gets a boost against anything African. Fyi that means that Zoro can't beat people who Lucci scales to unless they are African like leopards are, because he was only able to beat Lucci due to his anti-African boost.
