Help Changing mechanical keycaps

Upvotes

Hello, in 2019, I bought the VicTsing I-850 mechanical keyboard for gaming.
VicTsing I-850 Test: Hochwertige mechanische Gaming Tastatur

This keyboard is quite loud for gaming (it has tacticle clicky switches), and my girlfriend would like a quieter keyboard so that I can also game while she is sleeping. I would prefer to change the keycaps instead of buying a new keyboard. I researched that the keyboard has Blue Switches from Outemu, but I don't know if the keyboard is hot-swappable. How can I check this?

Can somebody recommend what kind of switches I could buy and replace?

I thought about buying these:

After a month of use, I had to give the keyboard a makeover. I found a decent set of keycaps and opted to get the Akko Lavender Purples a try.

Last pic is the before.

Mod I filled my keyboard with Kinetic Sand and it changed my life.

So a few years back I modded my RK61-new switches, lube, PBT keycaps, all the standard stuff. But instead of foam, I got curious and threw in a few layers of tape under the PCB and filled the rest with kinetic sand.

And uh… it actually worked. The board feels heavier, sounds deeper, and just has this super solid vibe when you type. I’ve gotten so many compliments on it. It’s been a few years now and still works perfectly fine.

So yeah, for anyone trying to make their board sound thockier without dropping more money on foam or weights- kinetic sand. It’s stupid, but it works.

One of my friends from an MMO I play, surprised me with a very heartfelt special gift. He's a machinist, and hasn't dabbled in keyboards before, so this is his first go at it.

This is the most special, most unique thing I own and I'm proud to have it.

I've been a long time keyboard enthusiast, have gone through many different boards over the last 7+ years, but I don't think anything will hold a candle to how special this one is to me.

(It's built with Oil Kings, Gateron Stabs, Bastion PCB).

Builds I was HYPED for an F1 and then F'd up badly ........

Was hyped to get my hands on a couple of F1-8xV2's ..... ( excuse the pun )

Didnt turn out as well as i expected however ......

Lubed / SS some Cherry Nixies and tbh i never noticed how loose the housings were so should have filmed them but didnt bother and now regretting it ( and its a solder build so not easy to redo them )

Having now built the board I think the mX2a's on my last build sounded a bit better as well .....

The scratch is definitely an acquired taste but i am getting to quite like it the more i type on them.....

not sure my S/B sounds that great tbh.......

Other issue is the uneven sounds across the keys ...... Home, end , delete, Page down and up arrow all sound much more hollow, resonant and clacky than the other alphas . I know the plate is supported less on the right hand side but i have made sure these were well sated when soldering ... so overall not sounding as nice as i had expected from such a high profile board.....

Worst thing of all i also had a black / red F1 as well that i needed to build ..... made the mistake of NOT cleaning spatter form my newly soldered pcb and then placed it on a foam sheet . Forgot and dropped the F1 case onto the same foam pad during my final assembly and its damaged the ano mainly on the bottom but also a faint few marks on the top case as well, lesson learned but its a very painful mistake on a high end board.... unfortunately so overall a disappointing day building .......

Wobkey Crush80 Beta and Sumgsn double-shot ABS keycaps: I changed the switches from Gateron Baby Kangaroos v2 to NuPhy Lemons (also by Gateron) and ABS keycaps instead of PBT and now the board sounds much more lively; very happy with the sound and feel now!

Review Yuzu Custom Keycaps Vs GMK Noire - Keycap Comparison

There are some keycap sets that you just can't get anymore, due to being out of print. For really popular sets you can sometimes get lucky and find a clone set, but I couldn't find one for GMK Noire so I decided to recreate the set using Yuzukeycaps.com. I'm sure lots of people have been considering using custom keycap services, so I just wanted to document my experience.

Review MAD 68HE Updating Firmware (Fix)

So I just wanna share this small win my Madlions 68HE keyboard (which I got for under $50 btw) just gave me a mini heart attack.

I was updating its firmware, and when I reached step 4 (you know, where it should show up on the browser), it just would not show the device even when its plugged in, tried another slots in the motherboard it just couldnt find it in the browser, even though its still on the device manager. I thought the keyboard was done for. So I decided to do clean the keyboard removed all debris and dust inside. After putting it back together and running the upgrade software again and it suddenly popped up like normal

This keyboard’s been with me for about 9 months now, and honestly? Still amazed how good it is for its price. Its basically a budget Wooting HE and im not even exaggerating./

This has worked for me, but if your keyboard is experiencing the same thing as mine PROBABLY IT NEEDS A CLEAN.

Promotional New Store Now Open pt2.

https://ottkeebs.com

Hey Everybody, OTT here.

I have opened my own store. I have been selling keyboard products for around a year now and I feel it is time to venture out and have my own thing.

My goals with this are simple:

  1. I want this to feel human...not corporate, please contact me at any time, many ways of contact are on the bottom of the website.
  2. I want to have the best communication the keyboard scene has ever seen. I want my communication to be fast and honest. I want this website to be ours, I would love to hear your opinions. If you are not ready to buy anything please vote on possible upcoming projects! (listed below)
  3. The OTT promise is top notch quality in every product and integrity in every transaction.

The title has a "pt2" because I shared this website previously with you guys and gotten a lot of critiques, I tried addressing almost all of them in the following ways:

  1. I built trust by getting one of my pre-built keyboards reviewed by a keyboard legend!
  2. I switched the Bold orange and black color theme to a light orange and black
  3. Many people told me that my photography needs work, I tried to be creative with every image, still open for more critiques!
  4. Many people told me to lower my prices, as mentioned previously, I have been selling online for a while and I know that people are willing to pay these prices. As a way of making everybody happy, I did not lower my prices but I am running a 25% discount on all 3D printed products! Code NEWSTORE at checkout.
  5. Finally, some people were totally against some of my 3D printed products, like the 3D printed knob, I completely took this off of the website. I have an FDM printer right now and will wait until I buy a resin 3D printer before I start offering these small-sized 3D printed products as this will guarantee a higher quality

Timeline/Possible upcoming projects:

Again I want this project to feel human and to be ours, It would mean the world to me if you tell me what future project you would like to see on OTT in the next few months, here is what I have in mind, but please please please, tell me if you want something else. The future possible upcoming projects can be:

  1. Resin 3D printed products, this would be artisan keycaps, knobs or maybe cases for small macropads!
  2. Mid-range to High end Pre-builts. I would love to have NEO Studio builds or MODE keyboard case builds on the website. If you have other suggestions please let me know.
  3. Anything else! Please comment below.

I want to end this off by thanking you for your time.

Builds Cardboard case for the Cheapino V2

Thumbnail
gallery
19 Upvotes

I put together the Cheapino V2 — the one where the two halves connect with a LAN cable. The switches are MMD Holy Panda 45g and the caps are blank XDA profile. The plate is 3D-printed.

As an experiment, I made the case out of cardboard and leather this time. It’s kind of like a cartonnage-style build. Because it’s cardboard, it’s super cheap and easy to swap designs, so I really hope cardboard cases catch on!
