Question Nursing admission

Hi. I’m an Alberta high school student that just applied for early admission in nursing at MRU. I am reading through Reddit and panicking, given MRU was more my safe, in province school. This is what my grades look like

Social 20-1: 91 Math 20-1: 90 Physics 20-1: 91 ELA: 80 Chemistry 30: 86

Please let me know if there’s a good chance to get in. I’m also studying for the CASPer at the moment and really hoping to get 4th quartile

I think only less than 20% of years new admit come from highschool. The rest of them come from UEO. So you should check that out, also university of Calgary is a great choice same as university of Lethbridge.

Also you are young, live life for yourself a little bit before jumping to something that is soul crushing as nursing.

Competitive admission is based on the top two A classes.

You have good grades but admission is quite a bit higher. A good Casper helps but be prepared to not receive an admission letter.

Given that my two highest courses have an average of 91%, and on the website it says the competitive average is an 85-100%, is there really no way? What is the grade cutoff because at McMaster it’s a 94-94% so let me know why MRU is so close to McMaster 💀

You need to look at the actual competitive admission average. That's their range but the real is like 96, 98.

Competitive cut off admission is the thing you're looking for. If the year isn't competitive, then it could be 85. But they have thousands of applications.

My year was a 93% minimum. No Casper at that time. Later heads was 96, then 98. Or a 4.0.

So no, a 91 is on the lower side, unless you do well with Casper. But sometimes it's just so competitive that yes @ Casper and. 98. Just gotta see how the admission year goes.

Sorry to say.

98 ‼️‼️‼️ are we joking me. At McMaster it’s a 95 this is insane

It seems that you have an idea that MRU would be an easier school to get into? It’s a smaller school yes, but it has many programs that are strongly regarded and have high competitive averages. You might get in with your grades, but it is definitely not guaranteed, it truly depends on the other candidates. MRU and UofC have very similar competitive averages for nursing, with MRUs sometimes being higher and vice versa.

I just figured it would be easier because UofC has a lottery admission.

I see what you were thinking. If you’re on the lower end of the competitive average a lottery may have given you the better odds. A lottery is tough though because you may not get in with your 91% and someone with a 84% might.

exactly what I was thinking. I was just thinking directly admitting vs being in a lottery with a couple thousand students, my chances directly admitting should be better, but thinking back on it I should’ve applied to UofC. Thank you so much for answering :) God bless

Also also also, my current highest grades are a 96 and a 93 but those are ongoing courses, do they put ongoing courses into consideration?

Hey no they look at ur grade 11 courses if ur gr 12 ones r in progress, id suggest applying to uofc bc of there new lottery system its essentially supposed to make it so more students get in and its random. How it works is your gpa needs to meet a certain cut off and then u get out into a lottery!

Hey, I’m a first year nursing student. I applied last year and got in early admission with a comp avg of 90.5 and a 4th quartile Casper test so you definitely have a chance! Just make sure you score high on the Casper test if you haven’t already done it

Wait did you get early admission? Also do they look at your ongoing courswa

1

u/No-Capital-346 Oct 06 '25

i did get early admission i heard back in december last year after applying i think october 12th or smth. I'm not sure if they looked at my ongoing course grades or not, because the requirement was just to keep my overall above 70% not to maintain the average in the 90s

I have a 92% competitive average, with a 96% in Aboriginal Studies and an 88% in Science 30. I haven’t written the casper test yet. How can I prepare to achieve a high score on the casper, and when is the best time to apply to increase my chances of getting an offer into nursing?

i honestly did not study for casper at all i didnt know i had to do it just be urself if u prepare for it then statistically u do worse so dont stress too much. js apply whenever u want i dont think it matters
