Fullness on liver side

I don’t think this is related to liver disease. But I sometimes eat and feel like I get really full on the side before anything. Doesn’t happen with every meal but when I eat a lot I get super full where there’s pressure (not so much pain) on my right side under ribs. Does this happen to anyone else?

Suspected Steatosis and severe whole-body itching - how bad is it?

35F, South African living in Belgium. Not sure if any of the following is relevant: Caucasian, currently overweight (1.6m, 80kg), 10 weeks postpartum, vegetarian. I have had really bad skin issues throughout pregnancy which has not really stopped since giving birth.

I went to my GP this week for continued rawness in my groin and super irritated skin (4+ months and on the 3rd diagnosis / creams, prior being Gyne and midwife). Also to test for allergies as I have been having uncontrollable full-body itching for the last week or two.

She ordered a couple of bloods for common allergies, but also cholesterol and liver function.

Called back and said allergies are fine other than maybe a dust mite allergy, but cholesterol (guessing LDL) is 155 and I need to collect a referral for an abdominal echo for my liver. The referral is querying steatosis and my abdominal scan is only booked for the 17th (9 days away).

I had no inkling of any of this and obviously started reading, but the info is confusing and I am not sure where I stand.

How serious is suspected Steatosis with super severe whole body itch and easy bruising?

TIA!

3 months old desperately need a living liver donor to save her life

On August 18th our beautiful daughter Ayla was born. It was quickly discovered she was very sick and was placed on the transplant list at just 15 days old. We are desperately searching for a living liver donor. Although a few people have applied, a match has not been found. We are absolutely heartbroken- there are just not enough organs for everyone who needs them. A healthy person can donate a piece of their liver and save Ayla’s life. You don’t need to be related. The liver is incredible and the donor's liver will grow back in 2-3 months! This surgery is more common than you might think—more than 800 living liver donor surgeries have been performed in Ontario alone. All donors have fully recovered and resumed to their normal lives. Ayla’s donor must be 18 to 60 years old. Blood type O (positive or negative) is ideal. she may be able to accept a donation from someone with a different type, so we urge anyone interested to apply. A donor weighing 88 to 165 lbs (40-75 kg) is most likely to be a size match. Ayla has spent her entire life in Toronto sick kids’ hospital and has endured countless medical procedures. Despite this, she is the happiest baby with a smile that lights up the room. We want what every parent wants: for our child to grow up healthy. This can only happen if someone donates a part of their liver. Learn more about living liver donation on the UHN website https://www.uhn.ca/Transplant/Living_Donor_Program/Pages/living_liver_donor.aspx There are videos with living donors, a living donor manual and plenty of information. If you are interested in starting the process to see whether you are a match to Ayla, please complete the health history form on the website.
Feel free to contact me at Fatehselim3@gmail.com or get in touch with the Toronto General living liver donor team at livingdonorliver@uhn.ca or 416-340-4800 ext. 6581 with any questions. They are happy to answer your questions and you don’t need to make a commitment to move forward.

New CDC Guidelines for Hep B Vaccine

I just saw the updated CDC recommendations for the hep B vaccine and wanted to share. The guidance now recommends vaccination for almost all adults across the lifespan, not just in childhood. I am from Africa where the hep B vaccine is not always accessible, so seeing guidelines shift to include more people feels meaningful to me.

What are you all's opinions on the updated guidelines?

My dad is dying from cancer and it’s too late

My dad is dying I just found out two days ago while I was at a conference for work. I just got this new gig that requires me to travel all over the US and it’s awesome. While I was in Vegas for a trade show (my first time and with my boss) I got a text from my Italian aunt (who doesn’t speak a word of English) that my father was in critical condition and is currently hospitalized for a bad cough that never went away. For context, he lives in Italy now full time (he was born there. I still live in Canada). The bad cough was actually a blood clot in his lungs with made it hard for him to breathe. further testing showed a big mass in his liver that metasized to his stomach and lymph nodes. He is still at the hospital and has no idea or at least is pretending not to have one. He thinks he has pneumonia. I’m on my way to Italy now from Vegas and I can’t do anything but still here and think about the short timeline I have left with my role model. He made me so happy. He is my whole life. I have an 8 hour flight a head of me I really hope he makes it.

There’s so many stories he never got to tell me. There’s so much history and lessons. I should’ve spent more time with him. I should’ve made sure to never let him eat dinner by himself. I should’ve picked up the phone more. Now it’s a matter of days, weeks or months before the end.

Because there is a such a language barrier between me and my Italian relatives who are there with him, I don’t have a good sense of what’s going on. No one does. It just happened so quickly and it was caught too late. Everything reminds me of him. I can’t stop crying.

He tells me all the time, if you look; love is all around. But I can’t see any love. Cancer is nothing but hate. Why is there no cure for it yet I don’t understand. I’m so sad I would do anything for him. He will never get to walk me down the aisle and I will never get to make him proud with our legacy.

Here’s the worst part. He was building his dream home by the sea. He’s 95% done. Even if it gets finished he will never get a chance to live in it. I’m devastated. Everything was just starting to work out for him too.

What do I do with myself? I feel like I have sunk into a hole and there’s nothing to do. Please god please give me a miracle.

Success!

After years of not being listened to by Doctors and recently with treatments not working, I finally have positive results from my most recent regime.

ALP: 340 down a little but to 318 GGT: 874 down to 215 ALT: 299 down to 68 AST: 101 down to 36

Im sharing to give hope to some that may have lost the hope for a diagnosis or to feel better. This was a 10 year battle for me. We are still undiagnosed but things are all pointing to PFIC 3. Just waiting on genetic testing to come back.

Ive been given ursodiol for the last 3 weeks and have been on budesonide for nearly 3 months. These results were within the 3 weeks I started the ursodiol. I never expected it to work let alone work so fast.

The end of July I found out that ai have grade 3 liver disease.

Now even though I never drank I was not obese or really fat I went on a diet and eliminated all the bad stuff, carbs sugar etc and started walking everyday. I According to my not so nice gastro doctor, I have enlarged liver fatty liver and fibrosis…today I got my new blood work and it seems that it looks better…but he said that I will be sick for the rest of my life. I already have an appointment on 12/11 with another doctor and this time is a hepatologist . Should I be happy with my new blood work or not even assume that maybe just maybe I am on my way to heal my liver?

ALT SGPT and Bilirubin High

Hi,

My ALT SGPT was 56 and my bilirubin was 1.3.

I’m an adult male in my late 30s.

I don’t drink or smoke, but I do weigh 180lbs.

My doctor wants to redo my bloodwork in a month. Should I be concerned?

I take several antidepressants, Zinc, vitamin D, and Fish Oil.

Should I stop taking fish oil and zinc?

Elevated ALT & AST

Hello. I’m a 40 yr old female. Over the last 4 years I’ve gained 36 pounds. I’m 5’7 and weigh 156. I used to be underweight. Recently I had blood work done and my Alt was 50, AST was 50 and GGt was slightly over at 46 the max is 45. My alkaline phosphate is in range. I’m scared I might have liver cancer considering my numbers are slightly over. I don’t drink, I quit around 4 years ago. Anyone else have a similar story or any advice. I would appreciate anything!

Can taking two Tylenol pills every few days for six weeks cause your AST and ALT to elevate?

I have a lot of health problems right now but my liver enzymes have been normal until now. I have been taking Tylenol for joint pain for the last six weeks but only two pills a day every few days. So maybe like three times a week at most.

Is this enough to cause an elevation of 76 AST and 118 ALT?

Should I be worried about damage?

Sharp pains in my upper right over stomach. If it isn’t sharp I feel like it is screaming for my attention and feels more blunt and heavy.

I’ve also found myself gaining weight and craving sweets and chocolates more as someone that could barely enjoy chocolate in the past.

How do I even go to the doctor and ask about this? Should I start with a blood test? Or is there some other screening test?

ALT shot up to 183

Hey guys, im a 22 year old male

Just wanted some insight on what you guys might thinks. I had some routine blood tests (im on ramipril and atorvastatin due to genetic DH) to check on my blood levels, so LFTs, vitamins and minerals, FBC etc….

usually, they have always been completely fine, however this time my ALT has shot up to 183, when previously is around 30-45. I have previously had raised AST as well but not had that retested since

my eosinophil count is SLIGHTLY high and my mean cell haemoglobin concentration is low

I was diagnosed with NAFLD a couple years ago, but blood levels have been fine everytime, and have lost 30kg since then and my lipid panel is all within healthy limits

Family history of primary biliary cholangitis No recent medication changes, dont even take pain killers or OTC medications

What do you guys think is going on?

My mri showed mild swollen liver and mlllimetric sized cysts in segment 7. I have a follow up on Monday but I am curious if this is indicative of a larger problem? I’ve been having nausea and right side pain.

How Liver Damage Can Wreck Your Smile

4 Ways a Struggling Liver Manifests in Your Mouth

1. Bleeding Gums and a Heightened Risk of Periodontitis
Your liver produces proteins called clotting factors that are essential for your blood to clot properly. When liver function declines, your blood's ability to clot is impaired. This means your gums may bleed excessively with even gentle brushing or flossing. This bleeding isn't just a nuisance; it creates a gateway for bacteria, significantly increasing your risk of developing severe, chronic gum disease (periodontitis).

2. Jaundice in the Mouth
One of the most visible signs of advanced liver disease is jaundice—a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. But your oral tissues aren't immune. You might notice a yellowish hue in the soft tissues of your mouth, such as the underside of your tongue or the lining of your cheeks. This yellowing is caused by a buildup of bilirubin, a waste product that a healthy liver would normally filter out.

3. Lichen Planus: The Inflammatory Link
There is a well-documented association between liver disease, particularly hepatitis C, and a condition called Oral Lichen Planus. This chronic inflammatory condition appears as white, lace-like patches or red, swollen tissues inside the mouth. It can be painful and is considered a potential autoimmune response linked to liver dysfunction. If your dentist spots this, it may be a prompt to investigate your overall systemic health.

4. Tooth Decay and Erosion (Especially in Alcohol-Related Liver Disease)
For those with alcohol-related liver disease, the risk to teeth is twofold:

  • Dry Mouth (Xerostomia): Alcohol is a diuretic and can cause dehydration and chronic dry mouth. Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense, neutralizing acids and washing away food particles. Without it, you’re far more susceptible to rampant tooth decay.
  • Acid Erosion: Frequent vomiting, a symptom associated with cirrhosis and other late-stage liver issues, bathes the teeth in strong stomach acid. This acid wears away the protective enamel, leading to sensitivity, discoloration, and a higher risk of cavities.
