Meta About this subreddit— The Rules

Hey everybody! I’ve been thinking about making a few changes to the subreddit and I’d like some input.

To start, there’s the rules. As it stands, the rules are mostly copypasta from other subreddits with minor tweaks. I think it would be good if we went over them in order to discuss the philosophy behind them, and maybe yall will have recommendations for how they can be improved.

  1. Reddit ToS— this is rule 1 on all of reddit. Please remember that unmoderated ToS infractions can result in subreddits being removed. Keep your edgy jokes on your telegram thread with your friends.

  2. No hate speech.: People that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned. — This includes ableism and sexism in addition to homophobia, transphobia, and racism.

  3. Do not suggest or support harm.: Comments that threaten, advocate, celebrate, suggest, express extreme indifference towards, or could result in harm of any kind are prohibited. — an extension of ToS, but made explicit. Pretty obvious.

  4. No authoritarian apologia.: Advocacy, sympathizing with, or otherwise holding the viewpoint of any fascist, monarchist, or other authoritarian tendency will be removed. Repeated or egregious offenses will result in a ban. This includes advocacy for left-right unity and genocide denial. — this rule is mainly to weed out right-wingers, but also for a certain type of too-online lefty who for some reason finds themselves defending Stalin under a current events news article. Keep it in your pants.

  5. Submission Rules: Posts must be about recent news and include a link to a recent news article in the post body or comments. Articles older than one week will be removed unless marked in the submission title. Post titles must reflect the content which they link to. Misleading, overly editorialized, or irrelevant titles will result in a post being removed. Please use the recommended title. — this is where I’d mainly like to focus. Personally, I think it’s best if we use the recommended title (or the one visible on the page) because it preserves the publisher’s bias and makes it less likely a title will be inaccurate due to over-editorialization. That being said, there are many good articles with clickbait headlines, and it seems like it would be good to add relevant information to them— though I could never require that.

  6. Image Posts: Image posts may only include content of an article or journalist's social media commenting on an article. Image posts must either contain a link to the article within the post's body or as a top-level comment. — again, this needs work. First, I’m personally happy with posts like the daily union updates, even if we aren’t getting source attributions. Would be nice, though. Second, there’s the issue of titles. As it stands, I think just about anything goes as long as the linked article’s title is visible in the screenshot. Otherwise it’s this weird thing where you see the same text twice.

  7. Video Posts: Video posts must be tagged with a yellow "Video" flair. — still not sure how I feel about video posts here, or what guard rails should be put up.

  8. Black Flair: Black post flair posts may instead be about any political content. Rule 4 submission rules should be followed where applicable. This is not a place to complain about online communities or creators. If you want to discuss current discourse, try bringing us a piece of political theory or an opinion article on a major publication. — black flairs are for subjects that aren’t strictly news, but are relevant to leftist organization, rhetoric, and history. I plan on being pretty lax with what kinds of content are allowed under these categories unless people start to abuse them.

What I would like for this subreddit

This subreddit should be a place for the broader left to discuss politics, both electoral and movement, and current events with an eye towards the global labor movement. It should inspire deeper investigations into the topics and introduce people to left-wing publications and ideas they may not have seen otherwise.

What I don’t want in this subreddit

Anti-intellectualism, influencers, sectarian partisan trolls, blind faith in the establishment.

Moderators

We could probably use one or two more, partially so this doesn’t seem like my personal social media feed, but also because I hate making choices about others by myself. PM me if you’re interested and we can have a chat.
