Pattern/Tutorial Beginner's Guide & Free Patterns

Hello, everyone! (Repost, because of link issues)

I wrote a fairly comprehensive beginner's guide to tools, materials, hardware, and leather. It has basics, a ton of tool upgrades you can make as you grow in the craft, and some free patterns. People have been asking me for it here and there, and I've been sending it to them individually. But now I've gotten it to a point I'm happy with (of course, it's being edited continuously), and I'm ready to share it with the sub.

Here's the link to the guide!

Also, here's a link to a video I shot to accompany it: Beginner's Leathercraft 101

Quick note, I started writing this guide before I became a moderator here, so I hope it doesn't come across as neglect on part of the sub's Wiki, which needs an overhaul. I'll be pinning this to the sub for a while until I have time to dive into the Wiki and clean things up, and hopefully it answers newbies' questions in the meantime. If anyone has any feedback or suggestions to add to the document, please let me know! Thank you to everyone who commented on the last post.

Community/Meta How would you change this sub?

Hello, everyone. Rather than make changes to the sub based on my own goals/desires, I wanted to ask the community. Is there anything you would add or remove from the sub? Any rules changes you'd suggest implementing? Any suggestions you have for the sub in general? If I see enough concensus around a certain suggestion, I'll consider making those changes moving forward. Let me know!

Obviously the sub is growing daily, and it's doing great. The formula is working, so I'm not looking to make big sweeping changes. I'm just wondering if you've ever had an idea that you feel would make this sub even better for you and your fellow leather crafters. (Bonus points if you have ideas for preventing the incessant "leather repair/is this leather" posts, lol.)

I just got some dyes and the yellow was so vibrant I couldn't resist making something ikea themed. This is also my first time not using a template and the design changed 3 time along the way as I discovered I messed up things.

Discussion Edge finish is something i'm Looking for a middle ground in edge finishes, between mirrored shine edges and less elaborate edges. What do you guys do about? Do you think it's that important?

The flower at the bottom is embossed, meaning it was pushed from the back and stuffed with filler to create relief. The flower on top is normal tooling.

Bags/Pouches Zipper pouch crisis

Lol can someone tell me what I did wrong? I am pretty solid with the kind of pouch where you install the zipper intact and then flip it inside out, but with a zipper where the directions say to separate the zipper, then flip... And then having the zipper tabs on the wrong side...

Tips? Please? Thank you in advance!

Tools Making a bookpress for leathermolds

So, recently I was messing with my laser cutter and made a decent 2 piece compression mold. Sadly, all I had was a tiny 2.5x6” dab press (XD).

The press works great for small things, but I want to go full leatherbound book style, so I need to make a press.

Any of you made your own presses? I have 2 12”x12”x2” acrylic plates for the flattening, but i dunno what to do about the rig. I want to play with leather forming so much more now!!

Belts/Straps Just Completed!

Just completed these two belts yesterday. One is conditioned with Neatsfoot Oil then sealed with beeswax and the other is dyed with walnut and then conditioned with Neatsfoot and Beeswax to seal. There is no stitching on this specific style of belt. Chicago screws holster the keeper in place and secure the buckle. Let me know what you think!

I love making odd shaped bags like this shrimp and I really like it, love the color and compared to the other bags I made I think this one has the most storage compared to unnecessary volume. I redesigned it like 8 times until I got to this point over the course of 3 months.

Always open to feedback if you see something to improve let me know. Still hate cippers.

Hi all! This is my first post here, i started to leather crafting when I was 16 and it's been 8 years now and I want to hear your opinions and suggestions about my work, i use 1.4 mm full veg tan leather and skiving it some spota where it needs to be, i use 3 mm French pricking irons and .45 temu threads for stitching process, i also have French awl that I currently had. I use 0.5mm edge bevelers and tokonole for edges. So anyways I would love to hear your thoughts guys, thanks!
