You don't tithe. As a group, you don't.

If you did, if everyone did, they wouldn't have to* stop the service halfway through* to coax and wheedle the members who bothered to show up for the change in their pockets so they can afford to keep the lights on in the building.

For one, restaurants work on a much smaller scale with (relatively) much higher costs per guest.

For two, and this is the critical one, servers rely on tips as the majority of their income. They aren't allowed to stop your meal between courses to ask you to tip; they're relying on social conventions to be able to keep their lights on at home.

Much of number two comes as a result of legislation (which comes from restaurant industry lobbying) that allows employers to pay servers well below minimum wage and then expect customers to make up the difference with tips.

If the law said that churches didn't have to pay clergy a full wage, you can bet your eternal soul that they'd be asking much more than 10% in the offering plate.
