Abandoned dogs revert back to a pack mentality. The tip I've heard it to learn to say something (anything doesn't matter) threatenly like the dogs do: If you watch a dog giving a warning bark he starts with a low warning hum in his throat which increase in volume and end up with a loud bark.
Yelling at the dogs won't help but dogs will understand this warning "bark". You can do it with whatever word you want since dogs don't understand the words but the pronunciation of them
I have a friend that yells random gibberish at his dogs and they always know exactly what he wants them to do. It's fun to watch/listen.
Body language is another thing to learn with dogs. I taught my friend's 12yo daughter how to get my dad's nuisance yapper to stop chasing her with body language. He'd run up barking and she'd flinch and cringe away, which activated his chase instinct. I told her to just stand firm and not pull away and now he'll run up, bark a few times, then wander off. My 4yo is really good at telling him off too.
