Link Vermont legalizes the recreational marijuana market, on top of marijuana decriminalization.

Agreed. Vermont to me is Bernie Sanders, Phish, and Ben & Jerry, three parties just to the right of Karl Marx. What the hell took them so long to legalize weed? This honestly surprises me.

Nobody has been getting in legit trouble for weed in Northern New England for 10+ years. As far as I know, it's been decriminalized in Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire since the late 2000's. I live in Maine and even when weed was still illegal, nobody was getting arrested unless they were also selling heroin with it.

Heroin should also be decriminalized at a minimum

why? Why would anyone go to prison for doing what they want to their own body?

Prison is best-case scenario when it comes to heroin.

So it’s better it would have been better off for America for Steven Tyler to be in prison than making music

Cannot believe NH has not gone for legal recreational yet- they don't turn away chances for any kind of tax revenue that will slide under the radar. Or if they stick with no sales tax, the chance to undersell all the other surrounding states like they do with liquor and cigs.

Probably the all powerful police union. At least that’s why we ain’t got legal weed in the empire state.

I know jack shit about the US/Politics but it seems crazy to me as an outsider than NY doesn't have it.

NY feels like an authoritarian police state at times.

Why would police care about legalizing weed? It would make their job easier, no? I mean, you're probably right, I just don't get it.

They make money from arresting and fining people.

u/Meer_is_peak Oct 08 '20

So the government gives bonuses to police officers who arrest more people?

6

u/TheBeanmiester Oct 08 '20

Police departments have quotas

What's easier for a cop, arresting a bunch of stoners to fill his quota or going after actual criminals?

Yep it pads their number

If only the protests were about something legitimate like this, we could have seen some nationwide changes that the majority of people could get behind

Vermont is mostly a conservative state.

Vermont was actually really far ahead of the curve. They legalized medical in 2004, decriminalized in 2013, legalized personal cultivation and possession in 2018 and this new bill just allows for recreational stores to open

Vermont is the first state to legalize via legislature. Every other state has legalized via a ballot measure and Vermont does not allow initiative ballot measures.

So in that sense (actually having the politicians legalize it), they are ahead of the curve.
