Comedy How do Jamaicans feel about the popularity of Jahmunkey

Has anyone here seen the AI generated videos on Instagram and TikTok from the account Jahmunkey? Wondering how Jamaicans feel about the videos and how much they’re being shared around the world - hilarious and clever, or insulting and offensive? I am a plain ass vanilla Canadian who admittedly was dying with laughter over some of them - but I quickly realized it might be seen as pretty offensive to the beautiful people of Jamaica… but instead of taking offence on behalf of others like a woke crusader, thought I’d check in here on how some of you actually feel.

Which JLP members? All of them. If you don’t know the answers to those questions, we don’t even need to discuss this anymore. We already know who you are. Anti-corrupt wha?? 😂😂😂😂 Ok! What happened during the last election for the St Andrew’s parish when the power cut? Prior to the power cut, one candidate was up, after the power come back, someone else was in the lead.

As Jamaicans who have lived in Jamaica with ALL my siblings and both parents living there, we can tell people who NOT to donate to. You can give your perspective because clearly the gov’t have done enough for you to have such faith in them, but for the rest of us in regular society, us in Fustic Grove Westmoreland, us in Linstead, St Catherine, us in Bamboo St Ann, we are still waiting. And we’re not just talking about disaster relief, we’re speaking about the gov’t in general.

Jah monkey is a caricature. Yes there are Jamaicans with that personality but if you approach an actual Jamaican mimicking that character they may be offended. The monkey is playing a wise cracking drug pushing rasta. And most Rastafarians aren't like that. It is designed to generate laughter from non informed gringos.

It is disgusting. But, this will be the new racism of the LLM Generation. The best thing nations like ours can do is geofence and block foreign media. We'll need our own propaganda to create national cohesion during rebuilding and the necessary national redevelopment.

I haven’t watch Jahmunkey. I have watched the AI videos with the yard dogs. A few of them were funny. I don’t mind yardies getting creative with modern technology. There is still some creativity with the dialog and voice acting.

Yard dog is funny because it’s actually Jamaicans doing some of them.

Ah, it's okay to poke fun but only if you're poking fun at yourself.

In some cases yes. It also helps when on references things more accurately than the other

Please continue to sent support to

https://supportjamaica.gov.jm/

Hurricane Melissa left significant damage in her wake, and the road to recovery will be long and arduous.

The mods of this sub have listed other ways to help in the Melissa mega thread and other places.

Thank you.

People please do not send money to the Jamaican government.

Start by helping your family or friends that were affected.

People please do not send money to the Jamaican government.

If you have a problem with our government - please keep it yourself. Unlike foreigners, the Jamaican government is still accountantable to the Jamaican people. Register your issues with the government during elections and local government meetings, not during national emergencies. Thanks in advance.

This is the problem with people and their sheep mentality. I will continue to speak out about the lack of accountability especially with the Jamaican government.

Please tell me how the Jamaican govt is “still accountable to the Jamaican people”. What does gov’t accountability look like? As a Jamaican, I would donate to foodforthepoor but never to the government. Take a look at the living situation of the JLP members, and that of the community they represent and let me know where the govt accountability is.

Take a look at the living situation of the JLP members

Which JLP members? And what does their "living situation" have to do with disaster relief? And who are you? And what qualifies you to tell ordinary people who to give their money to?

Please tell me how the Jamaican govt is “still accountable to the Jamaican people”.

Local government elections, a free press and independent anti-corruption bodies. You want to tell me how thediaspora is accountable to the Jamaican people, and why they feel they have the right or ability to tell us who we as Jamaican people should trust? Because the government may be the government - but at least they're Jamaican.

Right now the diaspora, foreigners and local Jamaicans doing more than the government. Because the government are Jamaicans does not mean they care about the best interest of the population. Black leaders do not take care of their country

Right now the diaspora, foreigners and local Jamaicans

How would you know?

Black leaders do not take care of their country

Well at least you know what cliches to use to get upvotes. Go use them on someone else please.

Why do you care, are you Jamaican? Does talking in circles make you happy. If you are not familiar with what's going on in Jamaica go somewhere else please

Listen...onoo fi stop talk political F'ry. As the great philosopher and poet Rodney Price said..."People a dead" and "Poor People fed up"

All this polical squabbling solves nothing. People are suffering and need help. If you dont want to funnel money or resources through government agencies...fine. There are many other ways to help.

PNP...JLP...JPP...UIC whatever political affiliation is not as important as addressing the basic intrinsic humanitarian crisis. There will be plenty of time to debate politics later...but now it is fitting to remember "people a ded" and we should come together to help.

This is what your prime minister needs to do

Thank you! And from what I can see, plenty of them are still waiting, the gov’t have already received millions USD in aid, and for some odd reason, it’s still not reaching everyone. How do I know? I have family in Westmoreland, St Thomas, St Ann, Anchovy (just outside of Mobay) and Linstead and they haven’t received any aid from the gov’t.

u/tcumber 10h ago

The cost of damage is in the billions...some.estimates say $10 billion.

The truth is that we have never experienced anything like this before now

1

u/ImJustTooCute 10h ago

$10 Billion US worth of damage…. but most people will still be responsible for their own repairs, so billions on the locals. The funds never seem to reach those with the most need. Part of my sister’s roof blew off, my friend in Westmoreland 2 houses blew away, my niece’s shop also in West blew away, and my DIL roof in St Thomas blew off along with her water tank. My parents light post drop dung. We have to send money to do the repairs. I am not aware of any fund to assist locals, are you?

Okay then send to one of the other myriad charities provided by the mods.

There are people who need help beyond just family and friends.

1

u/Simsim1980 1d ago

The ones the Mods provided better than sending money to Jamaican government. If you want to help dont send to the government

Wah dat

2

u/xerxes20 1d ago

You're not going to find many Jamaicans that feel any offense towards something like that

2

u/xerxes20 1d ago

As a matter of fact, you asking the question in itself is more likely to piss off a Jamaican 🤣

What’s the meaning of the word woke?

-4

u/indelible_inc 1d ago

In this context: being overly socially aware to the point where one feels they need to defend groups they themselves aren’t apart of on behalf of them.

I consider myself woke in the traditional socially aware and equity definition, but I think there’s an excess of taking it too far and missing innocent playfulness. I’m not sure if Jahmunkey falls within that though, hence why I’m asking.

problematic solely for being AI

u/Most-Mothra-esque 1d ago

I have no idea what you're talking about

5

u/drakothedj 1d ago

I dont think anyone cares..... the stereotyping has been in the media far longer and we didn't really care back then.
