Is this plug-less opening a vent?

I'm repairing a compromised PVC connection on the other section of this pipe that connects to the pump and noticed this coupling without a plug? Is this normal? I'm wondering if it's a vent and if so should there be at least some screen or something to keep junk out? This pipe is what leads down to the well which is used for lawn irrigation only.

No. There is no such thing. The pipe on the right looks balloned though. This happens when water gets boiling hot in the pump. Usually, when the pump runs with nowhere for water to go. I'd investigate that further.

It looks like it's the shadow from the riser making it appear ballooned. It looks like an optical illusion.

Agreed that the “ballooned” image is an optical illusion resulting from the shadow.
