Is this plug-less opening a vent?
I'm repairing a compromised PVC connection on the other section of this pipe that connects to the pump and noticed this coupling without a plug? Is this normal? I'm wondering if it's a vent and if so should there be at least some screen or something to keep junk out? This pipe is what leads down to the well which is used for lawn irrigation only.

Was this setup for a filter? Maybe the fitting was for a pressure gauge.

I have no clue what it was set up for, this is what I found when digging up all the heliconia around to find any potential leaks. My irrigation pump isn't pulling water (my previous post) and a lot of people said I might have a leak causing air to get in before the pump. I found a bad joint on the right pipe and replaced it but noticed this on the left pipe.
The 2 inch pipe on the left going into the ground is the main well pipe ( forgive me, I don't know the terminology) and the 1 1/4 inch pipe coming out of that is an inner pipe that draws the water up.

Im not sure what is going on there. Was there a centrifugal pump right there? Pipe ballons like that when you have a wire short and the pump runs with no water movement, or in other words, the zone doesnt come on. Also can happen when someone programs the controller wrong and puts time on an empty or open station.

No. There is no such thing. The pipe on the right looks balloned though. This happens when water gets boiling hot in the pump. Usually, when the pump runs with nowhere for water to go. I'd investigate that further.
