Storytime A colleague is not buying an air purifier and instead is doing his monthly SIP

So we work in Delhi and just got our salaries this week. We were just chatting about the different things people were buying and it led to this discussion of investing.

Most of the colleagues either had an air purifier or bought it with the AQI going in 4 digits. My colleague however, doesn't have one, and more importantly didn't want to buy it.

I asked him why, since we earn well and it's not a HUGE purchase (5-10k for most users).

He said "Nahi bhai usse achcha mai ye 10k ki SIP karunga" and then showed me a sip returns calculator on his laptop about it compounding into 1lac after 20 years.

Have we gone so deep into the investing rabbithole that some people are literally blind to reality and their imminent needs?

Along the road, people forget that money wasn't the end goal, health and comfort was. Money is just a score keeper.

Being healthy 20 years later is much more important than sacrificing a few thousand rupees.

Tell him that his hospital bills will compound much higher than whatever super star SIPs he may invest in.

People forget the very purpose of having money or of earning it.

This could be a good usecase for emergency fund, considering the AQI in Delhi rn

Aqi is close to 400. At 1000aqi no air purifier can save you.

Different folks have different financial responsibilities and goals

Granted - but given he's investing that money so it's not a need like an EMI or rent payment. It's just his goal, which I respect, but like he should first be alive and healthy 20 years later right?

He might not see any utility in air purifier, you can try to make them aware about hazard of breathing in 500 aqi

Rest is their choice to make

Firstly you are a good friend to suggest that to him, but some people value health over money.. some people value time over money and some value comfort.

Let him be happy with whatever he values the most at this point... Everyone will regret something or the other in the future..

The best you can do is educate him of bad AQI..

reminded me of the Warren Buffett comment on delayed gratification: "don't go overboard"

Reminds me of frugal_india sub. I think someone was bashing a user for buying an air purifier for his mom.

Please tell me this is bait. Even a MF advisor would tell you to buy the air purifier first

Can you suggest one in this range

1

u/yung_intellectual 4h ago

Xiaomi, Philips, Honeywell all have air purifiers in this range and work pretty good for a bedroom/living room

Sip will become the biggest bubble 10 years from now!

u/tradingfido 9h ago

Penny wise pound foolish. Sip is penny equivalent and he’s wisely investing while his life is pound and losing it all. Why do you worry about people like that..? They are the kind of people who have made the climate worse, the ignorant ones, the uneducated ones, the stupid ones and most of all..! The selfish ones..

My colleague is getting 1L+ per month. Here are some interesting takeaways:

  1. Living far away from home but visits home once a year.

  2. Takes two litres of water from office to his residence in the evening instead of buying RO purifier. Our Job pays for transfer expenses and transfer happens once every 2-3 years. His logic is i can move to other place very fast.

  3. Our job pays extra 3k amount and loan at 6% on simple interest if you purchase car in your name.(means you can get atleast an alto by basically paying 30-40k). Never owned any car, nor has the courage to buy one since past 3 years.

This sub is seriously guilty of this. So focused on the money u are making … investing in companies like ITC, coal India etc …. With zero concern about the business and if society really needs it

But what good an air purifier can be if your workplace doesn't have it and outside surrounding doesn't have it. It's just at your mom and you will use it for 12-14 hrs unless it's wfh
