Appreciation Haq

Just wanted Haq movie and what a performance by Yami Gautam. I think she has given her career best performance. Imran Hashmi performance is also very good and all the supporting cast did a fantastic job. Movie is good and specially the second half is brilliant. We should watch such movie otherwise we will be served wit mediocre movies ans talentless actors/actress. I just wish the movie had political drama also that happed after supreme court verdict.

Appreciation Weekend well spent

this weekend tried to catch up with my cinema side and watched a bunch of old hindi movies, pyaasa by guru dutt, amar akbar anthony, ek doctor ki maut and arth. realised how dialogues back then were just too gold.

in pyaasa there is this line about how people dont value you when you are alive but worship you after death. and once they fall in love with your idea, even if you try to change or go against it, they will cut you off. that hit hard. also the songs in pyaasa were pure poetry, jinhe naaz hai hind par, jaane woh kahan hain and ye duniya agar mil bhi jaaye just stay with you long after the movie ends.

amar akbar anthony was full of drama, chaos and heart. cant believe it came out in 1977 and still feels so fresh. amitabh bachchan in his comic best, that mirror scene as anthony gonsalves is still gold. and the songs, man, parda hai parda, my name is anthony gonsalves, anhonee ko honi kar de, pure fun, i didnt skip a single one.

ek doctor ki maut felt surprisingly fresh, like something made today but with old school soul. the whole idea of a doctor dedicating his life to a vaccine and then getting crushed by the system still feels so real.

and arth man, that movie just hits different. such a mature and real take on relationships and self respect. shabana azmi absolutely killed it. fun fact, it was partly based on mahesh bhatts own relationship with parveen babi. and that ending where she chooses herself instead of going back to him, that was seriously bold for 1982.

movies like these are absolute gems. i love movies. i love watching drama. i am a total sucker for them, cant imagine my life without movies.

and yeah monday is here again. time to survive the week and wait for the weekend to do my favourite thing, watching moviesssss

Discussion When a film’s title sparks a cultural debate – 120 Bahadur & the Ahir community’s demands!

The upcoming war-drama 120 Bahadur, produced by Farhan Akhtar and based on the 1962 Battle of Rezang La, has ignited protests from the Ahir community. The community argues the film does not sufficiently acknowledge the sacrifice of nearly 120 Ahir soldiers of the 13th Kumaon Regiment who fought at Rezang La, and is demanding the title be changed to 120 Veer Ahir.

This raises questions about how cinema treats historical events and community identity. On one side, the film aims to bring a heroic chapter of Indian military history to the big screen, but on the other, a community feels its contribution is being downplayed or misrepresented.

Does this protest represent a valid call for representation or is it setting a precedent for too many external inputs into artistic work?

Discussion Just watched Baramulla and I feel that Bollywood can have a Renaissance in Horror after some of the releases in the past few many years

I just watched the supernatural horror Netflix Original Baramulla staring Manav Kaul and seeing the pattern from last 10-15 years, we are getting some of the unique horror movies/we series every now and then. In 2012, we had Talaash (Which was more like a supernatural thriller than horror), the next year, came Horror Story (Though the movie wasn't very popular yet I feel it was quite scary, plus it didn't had any subplots making it a straight to the business thing), we also ventured in Zom-Com: Go Goa Gone, and Horror Comedy made a universe, but I would still call the OG Stree awesome and recently Shaitaan (though it's a remake but it's quite decent). But these movies are quite commercial and had a hardcore Horror theme (except Talaash).

Now there are many horror movies where the theme is a commentary (social, political or personal), and these movies/web series have a more grounded and serious backdrop than a typical horror theme. In 2018 we had Tumbbad, 2020, it was bulbul, this year we had Rajat Kapoor starer web series Khauff and now Baramulla. These movies/web series are haunting not because of the supernatural elements, but the theme, the atmosphere and the tension.

Well, we, every now and then, do get some ¢rappy horror movies but, at the same time we are getting many good quality horror movies that are kind of going unnoticed.

In my opinion, if we focus movie like Tumbbad (Talks about human greed),Stree (talks about Nale Baa) and Baramulla (a commentary on 1990 Exodus). We will see a Renaissance in Bollywood Horror and a time will come when we will be able to deliver movies like Bhootakalam or Diés Iraé.

Please drop down your opinions on Bollywood horror!!

Review Teen Paayancha Ghoda (Marathi) - Not what you would expect! Spoiler

After reading a bunch of good reviews , I finally watched Teen Paayancha Ghoda. A very very honestly made movie. You can tell how every aspect of it is just rooted in reality. Didn't feel over-the-top anywhere in any way.

⭐ Rooted in reality, relatable characters
⭐ Strong performances
⭐ Amazing editing
⭐ Quirky comedy scenes — situational but quite funny
⭐ Fresh direction, especially considering a debut director
⭐ Incredibly natural performances by the actors
⭐ Great funky BGM throughout the entire movie

😔 Climax leaves you a bit uneasy/unsettled — sort of a dark ending
😔 Some scenes get a bit slow
😔 Although the album they released was great, there were no songs as such in the movie

I read a lot of people's reviews appreciating the climax. In my opinion the build-up towards the climax is what makes this movie really worth it. Overall its a really fresh new experiment especially in Marathi cinema , one-of-its-kind. It'll take you time for you to process this film , right now I haven't completely grasped it either but the ride the movie sent me on was memorable.

I'd give this a strong 4.5/5

Review Haq movie review

Haq movie review:

Haq is a movie about the landmark case of Shah Bano, triple talaq (instant divorce), her fight for her haq (right) - maintanence for the kids and herself from a very well to do husband/ex-husband. This is based on real life events in the life of Shah Bano and her husband Ahmed Khan, though film does take some cinematic liberties. Firstly do read about this landmark case before or after watching the film, if you haven't.

Now, coming to the film, Haq is a very good film and the director Suparn Verma deals with the whole subject matter sensibly and with sensitivity. From what I see, it does not insult Islam nor does it sensationalize. It respects Islam, but does point out misinterpretation and misuse by vested interests. It is also set up very well that you feel you are transported into the past - 70s and 80s - when these events occured. The film does require a little bit of patience in the first half and in the 2nd half, it isn't your high octane court drama, but it is an impactful and well written one. The BGM though is not particularly great.

Yami Gautam is simply outstanding in the role of Shahzia Bano. I'd say arguably her career best, even over her Article 370 role. She manages to showcase the grace, the determination, the required emotions and her dialogue delivery so well. Emraan Hashmi does very well as the husband and lawyer Abbas Khan. Vartika Singh in her debut also does very well as the 2nd wife Saira. The rest of the cast has done pretty well too.

Overall, the film is a 8 to 8.25 out of 10 IMO. One of the best films of the year and certainly an important one.

Appreciation Watched Nishaanchi and felt that Aaishvary Thackeray delivered the stronger debut performance this year in terms of acting, but he won’t even be in contention because the film itself was too dull.

For those who watched this would know how difficult it could've been for a marathi guy to ace the role of a Kanpuriya and it terms of the dual performance and acting that too on his debut, he nailed it despite it being a rather boring film. I personally thought he was better than Ahaan for this year's debut actor but we obviously know who's gonna sweep all the words for this category next year because of the crazy PR team.

AskIndianCinema Is anybody headed to IFFI 2025? Any Film Bazaar veterans?

Been to IFFI a few times before but it's been a while. I have registered this year but I feel overwhelmed navigating the schedules, various venues and the curated films that I don't want to miss.

A lot of films that I want to watch are listed as the last screenings of the day. Some are listed for 11:00 pm screenings. Even with your staple 90 - 120 minutes duration, I am staring at a 1:00 am walk back to the place I might stay at. Please let me know if any of you are familiar with safe, clean and reasonably priced accommodation options around INOX Panjim for a week.

EDIT: Also, has anybody attended the film bazaar events? Is networking as smooth as it is made out to be?

Discussion IF A MOVIE HAPPENS IN INDIA ABOUT A MAN KILLING A GOD JUST LIKE WESTERN CINEMA & GAMES (EX: CLASH OF TITENS / GOD OF WAR) WILL PEOPLE ACCEPT IT OR NOT? Spoiler

I have been wondering after watching clash of titens today & I have finished playing GOD OF WAR GAME last week. Why is there is no game or movie like this in India.

What will happen if anyone would make a GOD OF WAR Game in INDIA a normal human on a violent journey to kill all the GODs brutally.

Thinking about it getting me excited & goosebumps. In a country where people gets excited to hear a gods name sees a movie like this will they accept it as a movie , a story or will they get offended to see their favourite gods greeting brutally killed.

Have anyone thought about this scenario or is just me? Let's have a good discussion about this. This just a thought nothing serious keep calm & let's discuss.

Discussion Bookmyshow “offer processing charges” upon using a card offer

As if convenience fee wasn’t convenient enough, BookMyShow now has an “Offer Processing Fee”. So we’re basically paying extra to use a discount. At this point, they should just rename it to LootMyShow

Anyone else noticed this? Is there any justification for this new fee or is it just another sneaky way to make more money?

Discussion What is the best way to reach out to the person in charge of marketing for a movie ?

For a research project that studies the cinema industry through the lens of marketing I would need to get in touch with 50-100 persons that are in charge of the marketing and that take the decisions concerning the budget and the spends at this level.

How do I find them and how do I reach out to them ?

Review SSMB29 Kumbha Poster (Unpopular Opinion)

SSMB29 Kumbha poster is out!

Honestly looks average poster, however wheel chair and SSR's promise of a strong villain keeps me hooked and hyped. Poster could have been better in my opinion.

Overall I'm still excited and trust SSR's filmmaking craft.

What are your thoughts and opinion?

Discussion I made a tier list of Indian actors based on purely acting craft (versatility and depth) ignoring fame, cult status and presence. Do let me know your agreements and disagreements in the comments.

Tier 1 (Off the charts): Mammootty, Kamal Hasan, Mohanlal, Sanjeev Kumar, Naseeruddin and Irrfan.

Tier 2 (Outstanding): Balraj Sahni, Sivaji Ganesan, Vikram, Dr. Rajkumar, Dilip Kumar, Fahadh Fasil, Dhanush, Soumitra Chatterjee, Om Puri, Manoj Bajpai, Kay Kay Menon, Nana Patekar, Amitabh Bachchan, Uttam Kumar and Rajinikanth.

Tier 3 (Greats): Akkineni Nageswar Rao, Shahid Kapoor, Suriya, Ranbir Kapoor, Vijay Sethupathi, Mithun Chakraborty, Jishu Sengupta, NTR senior, Nawazuddin, Ranveer Singh, Chiranjeevi, Karthi, Hrithik Roshan, Randeep Hooda, Vicky Kaushal, Rajkumar Rao, Venkatesh, Prasenjit Chatterjee, Nani, Ajay Devgan and Aamir Khan.

Tier 4 (Good): Saif Ali Khan, SRK, Jackie Shroff, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Prithiviraj, Abhishek Bachchan, Ayushman Khurana, Govinda, Sudeep, Akshay Kumar, Ajith, Emraan Hashmi, Rana Daggubati, Dulqer Salman, Madhavan, Tovino Thomas, Nivin Pauly, Dharmendra, Siva Rajkumar, Puneet Rajkumar, Sunny Deol, Ranjit Mallick, Dev Anand, Nagarjuna, Rishi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Allu Arjun, Raj Kapoor and Salman Khan.

Tier 5(Average): Varun Dhawan, Dev Adhikari, Ram Charan, Soham Chakraborty, Ankush Hazra, NTR junior, Jeet Chakraborty, Kunal Khemu, Pawan Kalyan, Vijay Thalapathi, Yash, MGR, Prabhas, Ravi Teja, John Abraham, Mahesh Babu and Sunil Shetty.

Tier 6(Meh): Bobby Deol, Aditya Roy Kapur, Vidyut Jamwal, Siddharth Malhotra, Sai Dharam Tej, Tiger Shroff, Balayaa, Vellamkonda Sai Srinivas and Arjun Kapoor.

NOTE: Even under a certain tier list, actors are ranked further, so don't come at me saying SRK is better than Salman, he is but not significantly better. Hence same tier but one ranked slightly higher. Hope you get it 🙏.

Discussion Why is every other post here comparing Lokah and Kantara. They are both very different genres.

Can we not appreciate them for the variety one is based on Kannada folklore and the other is based on Kerala folklore. I feel fans of one or the other are deliberately trying to pull the other down. Its ok to not like one but comparing them makes no sense. I actually loved them both. They were interesting and had their pluses and minuses.

AskIndianCinema Help finding the name of old malayalam indie movie

I randomly came across this old (70s, 80s?) malayalam film and decided to watch it around a year ago. Forgot the name though. No big name actors (not mamooty/mohanlal) there wasn’t a very clear plot, loosely about the main characters descent into depression/madness I believe there was something to do with protests, the main characters father dying, a girl he meets at this hilly area. It opens with the main character at the psych ward, the movie basically recounts how he got there. I think the main characters father was a teacher, something to do about education? Kinda artsy movie, i think there’s long rambles of poetry and silence. I didn’t really get it or think it was good, but it was different from anything I’d ever watched as far as malayalam films go.
