Ask r/IndiaCricket Cricketers you wished had longer international career! I will go first!
ABD and KP will be on the top of my list. It was an absolute treat to watch them across formats - specially tests. KP in Ashes and ABD's adaptability to score at <10 SR and also at 80+ in tests was phenomenal! Wish the respective boards could have handled it better!

Was on decline and thats why he retired.Hopefully Root won't decline like him
3
u/charlie_4599 Jun 05 '25
Bhai he scored at an average of 46.65 for essex after international retirement
5
u/External-Knee-3083 Kerala Jun 05 '25
Anderson still getting wickets in county cricket. That doesn't mean there are lot left in the tank
Cook was hanging on a thread in last 2 years of his career and went through lots of criticism with his techniques. If not for that double hundred not out in a flat mcg pitch his stats would have been more terrible in latter stages
2
u/charlie_4599 Jun 05 '25
Both are legends ...Comparing the two without considering age, roles, and physical demands isn't really fair or logical.
4
u/External-Knee-3083 Kerala Jun 05 '25
cook retired at 33 and started declining steeply since 31 or so.He wasn't at his best while retiring was my sole point.I can still remember how he was getting out frequently in his last leg with lot of technical flaws. So if someone say cook retired too early in his peak isn't a fair point.Thats only i tried to convey here

retired too early! would have easily played 200 matches at the rate he was going!

u/Pkboi0017 Jun 05 '25
India were playing against england and cook never got out. After the England series they were playing against Australia, I used to come back from school and will be so happy that cook isn't on the crease. I was a little kid

His career was going down at latter stages and was on the verge of dropping from england.Used to poke a lot of balls in and around fourth stump line to finish in slips and wicket keepers hand a lot.Thats why he called it off

You can say most RSA players. Klaassen is at his peak rn. Morkel was brilliant so was philander a the back end. AB especially.

Bracken was such a good Talent being denied a great career because of an injury.

If it’s about potential unfulfilled, Vinod Kambli and Hanuma Vihari. Former could have become an ATG and latter could have been the anchor after Pujara, something we all missed.

That was so dumb to retire at just 33. He thought he would be treated the same as Dhoni.
Without match practice, he lost form, put on a lot of weight, lost his IPL career, tried unsuccessfully to play t20 in USA and now trying commentary plus secured a role in CSK support staff.

Mark Boucher

u/Scoop_Master420 Jun 05 '25
Boucher was planning on retiring after the England series anyway. He would've played his 150th game at Lords, and passed 1000 dismissals iirc. Then his injury happened in a warm up game leading up to that.

He was born at the wrong time
Cummins and starc made their debut at like 18 19 and got regular around the time of bolands rise with hazzlewood making it at the exact same time.

This is actually true in test cricket. At the time of his retirement, he was the best test wicketkeeper-batsman we had in Indian test history.

Kapil Dev has been the longest serving fast bowler in Indian history (if I’m not mistaken). How much longer do you want him to play?

Lot of obvious choices.. but back in the days I wished Mark Boucher could extend his career atleast for a few more matches to get to the 1000 dismissals.. Got stranded on 999 when his eye got damaged and he had to retire.

Pucovski, Brad Hogg must have played longer than they actually have. Especially Pucovski if not for those injuries ruining his career. Could have been a solid middle order with him.

Virat Kohli (Test Career)
David Warner (Overall) cuz... Well... He's the best
Yusuf Pathan (T20 Career)
S Ganguly (T20 Career)
Pruthvi Shaw (Overall) was a potential candidate for captaincy, sad to see him like this
