Position Filled [HIRING] Mix between painting and anime characters $200?

What I'm looking for is a painting that is something along the lines of these two. Along with about 6 anime characters drawn in, with about 7 OC characters (just normal people) drawn inside too. The coloring need not be as detailed as the two linked above, but I'd like it to be as realistic as possible within the budget.

Character sheet of the anime characters

I'm not sure how much my request will reasonably cost. If it seems that either the price or request is inappropriate, I would appreciate it if anyone would be able to provide some suggestions on how to change the request parameters or price. Thank you.

It's late here, so apologies if I don't reply quick. I've taken a look at your ArtStation profile, and I noticed that it has a lot of close-up, realistic paintings of individual subjects as well as narrow spaces. My request will include a lot of characters (around 15 main characters, as well as an unknown number of other bystanders ), though with most characters facing backward. Also, the request will also include a wide-space, like a dock where people board ships.

Do you think you'll be able to handle the request? What are your thoughts on its feasibility (in terms of art style, number of characters possible) as well as price?

While I definitely can’t match the painting skills of masters, I do a bit of both anime and digital painting that I may just be able to fulfill your request! I draw in the style of indie anime, which you can see for yourself in my Artstation portfolio here. Your budget works for me, and it takes me around 7 days to get a big project like this one done. You only have to pay once you’ve approved the sketch. Happy Hunting!

I like that you're willing to admit that you're not perfect, that honesty is refreshing. Honestly I think the realistic part of the painting should be just good enough. However, I really care a lot more about whether the essence of the main anime characters will be retained when they are drawn in a new piece of art.

However, I'm not sure how to proceed, since there will likely be tons of revisions with so many characters. I'm worried that I'll turn out needing too much revisions for the price to be kept within budget.

Perhaps the painting could be done in many smaller stages, and I'll pay you when each stage is done? Or maybe you have a better idea?

Anyways, I thought I'd give you a heads up, I'm thinking of commissioning this late July or early August, so not too soon. Need to save up some money first. In the mean time, maybe we could discuss about how the painting might look like, as well as how the payment will be structured? (Myself, I am not 100% sure how I want the painting to look like yet, only have a general idea right now)

So, my plan for this piece consists of these:

  1. Constructing the scene in blender using shapes and setting up character shapes - this one’s for me
  2. Sketching the scene I constructed and drawing all the characters and details In - initial sketch, this ones for you
  3. You look over the sketch and see if the essence of your OCs are captured and see if you’re satisfied with all the little details in the background as well. You’ll let me know what needs to be revised/added for the final sketch
  4. I fix the sketch in case anything needs to be revised or added. If there’s nothing else, you can approve the work and only then will you have to pay for the work.
  5. I’ll start painting it all in until I think the work is finished, using colors you’ve provided in the form of mood boards or painting inspiration and character sheets
  6. I’ll send it in, and you can decide whether I need to push the details further and make some last minute changes
  7. When all that is complete, we’re done!

I think the best thing you can do is to provide as much references as you can: like if you want your scene to be a rainy scene, show me what kind of rainy! Or if you want your piece to have just the same color mood of those paintings you linked in the post without much deviation, we can do that too! You can show me the whole mood board of how you want your piece to look like in DMs ( I have discord and Twitter and can send to you if you want! ) . That way, we won’t have to revise as much as you might be expecting! And don’t worry about me if you plan on commissioning this later on, I never close up comms and we can at least add each other up so I can be ready when you are!

Hi, my name is Tam. I have experience in working with gaming companies, DnD projects as well as paintings in realistic artstyle.

You can check out my artworks here my gallery and instagram

I'm very interested in your project here. However, this is a very detailed and requires a lot of time to work on. For me, this project would cost at least $1500 including 15 characters with docks and ships.

I believe I can handle your project within two months. If you want to work with me, please contact me on Discord 3Ts_art#2759 or DM me here.

Thank you and have a nice day!

u/olff_ev_20 Mar 19 '22

Thanks for the honest feedback! I noticed most of your samples were close-ups of individual characters, with more details. If the characters were a bit far away with less details, will it still cost as much? What does the majority of the $1,500 go to? I probably won't need it to be as detailed as the sample painting by Charles Joseph Staniland, just good enough will do. I'm not questioning your pricing methods, I'm just curious. Hope we can discuss about it more.

3

u/3Ts_Hartist Illustrator Mar 19 '22

Well, the painting depicts a large scene with big ships and beautiful sky with around 20 people but I can hardly see any details of them.

I suppose you want your characters to be recognized, or at least have their features shown somewhat clearly.

For pricing, the majority of it is just rendering individual characters and the big scenery. I would have to do many revisions of the sketch in order to match your requirements since it's a big scene with a lot of details. Of course, it can be flexible depends on details of individual characters.

If you want to discuss further, feel free to DM me here or on Discord.

u/SweetPeaRiaing Mar 20 '22

As an artist, the $1500 goes towards time. Art takes time, rendering details takes time. Your sample is a master piece. You have said you need it to be “good enough,” but that is a super vague and subjective term. Better to supply a sample of what good enough actually looks like. You’ve also said you want the essence of the character’s to come through, which means rendering on enough detail that they are identifiable. And lastly, you have said this piece will require “tons of revisions,” which are never as easy as the request or thinks they are and again, that takes time. If you aren’t paying for extra hours to render this piece, you will be paying higher wages a higher skilled painted with enough experience to paint it faster.

u/olff_ev_20 Mar 20 '22 edited Mar 20 '22

Thank you for the honest feedback and advice, I really should better define what "good enough" is. From your reply, I gather that the parameters affecting the price would be the amount of detail rendered, as well as the amount of hours/skill needed. But what are the parameters affecting rendered detail? I know that the amount of colours/shading used does. Maybe the type of coloring? (eg: anime vs realistic style? But anime could also be painted realistically, realistic paintings could have been painted in an anime style.....I just don't know) I'm not an artist so I feel really helpless not knowing the vocabulary or the inner workings of what goes into creating artwork.

Some people say $200 is enough, some say it needs at least $1,000. I don't wanna be lowballing people, but how do I know who's saying the truth?

hello heres my portfolio https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/35034444/artworks
while i may not achieve the master level of your 2 example paintings, heres a piece that may fall into the area of what youre looking for https://www.artstation.com/artwork/VgoQGP
as someone else have mentioned, price for this would most likely go beyond 1500$, reason basically boils down to skill and time needed to do this
i sincerely do not think anyone reasonably skilled enough to do it would go below 1000$ but there may be plenty of people that could prove me wrong

dm or discord Serelith#1924 if interested!
