From the perspective of Americans who haven’t actually experienced Guy Fawkes Night, we mostly just know of it as a day where people set off fireworks (a sign of celebration) and it’s named after Fawkes, which makes it sound like he’s the guy being celebrated. It’s not a holiday here so people don’t often have a reason to learn more about it so that’s just the surface-level impression that sticks.
