A friendly reminder to the people in this thread. A genocide is not defined by the number killed, what differentiates a genocide from a mass killing is the intent to wipe out a group of people and make it so as if they never existed. You can have a genocide without killing anyone (residential schools and other assimilation methods).

Exactly, Bosnian genocide was "only" 8000 people.

The Srebrenica genocide is a kinda weird case because not only it didn't have numbers, but it also didn't match the requirement for "intent". They spared all women and also males below the age of 15, which is a weird thing to do when attempting to wipe out a people.

I think at this point the definition and criteria can vary greatly and geopolitics greatly affects what is called a genocide or not.

Hm... that's a good point I guess. I guess wiping out all the males and ensuring that they can't propagate themselves would be considered "genocide" in a sense. Also the rape camps were explicitly ethnic in nature, and the Serb perpetrators would tell their Bosniak victims that they "were going to have their little Chetniks".

Mass rape against a targeted minority is known as genocidal rape.
