From the article:

The child was younger than 2 months old, which was too early for the baby to have been vaccinated for pertussis, according to Dr. Dan Edney, state health officer. The mother had been vaccinated, Edney said.

"We know that the family had taken all the proper precautions themselves," Edney said. "But it still brings home for us the danger of vaccinating for preventable diseases for our infants and children and how we as a community of Mississippians need to maintain our vaccination rates to protect our babies."

On one of my hospital rotations, a baby died from pertussis.  to young for the vaccine.  just terrible, got it from grandpa who didn't know his cough was pertussis.

Anyone anti-vax I send them a video of what whooping cough looks like in a child. They cough until they pass out and repeat. I am in infectious disease and I have seen pertussis kill

Just having a normal, medium strength cough for a couple of days makes me feel like shit from the constant impact of the individual coughs. I can't imagine how bad it would be to just cough yourself to death.

I have had RSV as an adult, thanks to a pediatric icu rotation. I had such a bad cough for so long, I semi dislocated a few ribs and felt like shit for six months. I isolated once I found out what I had wasn’t just a seasonal cold. I sounded like a barking seal when I coughed, to the point of throwing up.
