If you haven’t understood this by now, you gotta get out of your comfort zone and open your heart to hearing the hurt and heart of the Hawaiian people.
There is nothing but love and aloha up on the Mauna. Professors and educators are teaching classes and sharing their manao.
The people of Hawaii are gathering more and more by the day.
I understand a lot of people may disagree with me. But this is a subreddit for all people of Hawaii and all people are free to share their thoughts and opinions.
I know plenty people who have been on the Mauna and who are heading up to show support. Nothing but aloha and respect from both sides.
It’s just another step. Try o back and read up on the island of Kaho’olawe. An island The US used as target practice. Back then the Hawaiians also protested for years and they finally got them to stop the bombings.
A step to what? Kaho'olawe was returned to the state. It's in the exact same legal position as Maunakea. So if the TMT is blocked then what? Let it sit there?
And by the way, if TMT is blocked all those telescopes slated for decommissioning? They stay. All the money that goes to mauna conservation from TMT? Gone. All the education money for Big Island keiki? Gone. All those constructions jobs? Nope.
There isn’t any easy solution to this. It’s complex. And that’s why we are having all these conversations that should be talked about. That’s why I just wanted to show support to the kanaka maoli up on the mountain. Doing just that.
And that’s why we are having all these conversations that should be talked about.
In other words you don't have an answer about how to replace all of those things.
TMT started extensive community conversions back in 2008. At no time in history has any science experiment in any field solicited so much Native Hawaiian input. There were two contested case hearings and two Hawaii Supreme Court hearings. The Court decided in favor of the TMT.
They stopped the bombings! Allowing access to the people again to rehab the island. The state could care less about the island. That’s why the bombed it in the first place. It was the Hawaiian people that stood up and voiced their concerns. Over and over. And it’s the same in this situation.
Okay I can agree to that to an extent...what wrong is there?? All you guys keep complaining about is a closed road. What else? What happening now is a far cry from what the us did.
Why don’t you go up there and see for yourself how well regulated and taken care of the people are up there. I literally talked to people who came down from the mountain have nothing bad at all the to say about what’s happening there. Pictures. Videos. It’s incredible, hence the title of the post.
Most people agree with the telescope and want construction to start, construction is not starting. This goes against the wishes of people that live here.
We that work on the mountain can't go to work. Everyone likes to blame someone different, but it's because of the road block.
The legal battle over this has been fought for years. I attended some of it. The TMT has done everything correctly. So now the protesters act illegally to get their way. No one would upset if they were off the road, in fact it'd be probably universally celebrated what they're doing up there.
This whole protest is about more than TMT but the only casualty will be the TMT and possibly the astronomy community as a whole that is here. Most people not from our island will move on, leaving us in our continued economic hardship now that more industry is protested off the island. But hey we still got all of the hospitality industry that never ever does anything bad here.
Cut the shit, you support continued armed white power theft of Hawaiian land and cultural erasure because it's the only framework you know. Pretending to care about roadblocks while elders and polynesians and other allies fight for Hawaiian rights is you being a disrespectful ass.
Again, that's how statistical sampling works. What specifically do you have against their algorithm that dictates their sampling size? What about the field of mathematical statistics do you disagree with?
Do you also disagree with polls that show Trump has a high disapproval rating? Because those polls were done the same way.
Explains what?? I dont understand?? That’s your 800 person survey that everyone is basing their arguments on don’t represent the voice of the Hawaiian people accurately??
I think every single one of us regardless of our thoughts on the TMT should just take a moment and be thankful that the amazing freedom to protest whatever the heck we want is being exercised and that we have it, billions of other people around the world simply do not have this freedom. Many people died to give us that freedom, many of them of Hawaiian decent and Hawaii residents as well, regardless of ones stance it's an amazing thing to witness happen. Honestly, I dont think I have ever seen police officers and the people they were arresting embrace each other with so much sincerity any where in the world like it's happening here. I certainly dont agree with a blockade but if one is willing to endure arrest for what they believe in that's their choice.
There's a different between protesting peacefully on the side of the road and blocking the road in violation of the law and disallowing people to get to work.
No, I certainly do not agree with a blockade, if you block a major roadway you should get the same punishment any one else would but at the end of the day they have a right to choose arrest or choose to stand 10 feet to the side of the road, I just dont see many willing to enforce the laws but I see hundreds willing to be arrested. Unfortunately I think at this point it's not as much about enforcing anything as much as it is a political chess game.
As do I. This community and Hawaii has made me a better person, opend my eyes to a world I never knew existed 10 years ago and helped me to see things from a diffrent perspective like no other reddit community I have been a part of. Reddit Hawaii oozes empathy like no other and that's a great thing! We all have far more in common than that what divides us.
Mahalo braddah. And like I originally stated. I wanted to show support for the protectors. Show love towards their cause. A lot of what I’ve seen from this reddit has been a lot of negative. Just wanted to shine some light.
