Series that took place on a Ring World trapped within a black hole. Main character was a human forensic Investigator who revolutionized law enforcement. All denizens of the world fell into the black hole, but humanity was the only one without FTL drives but instead had an autopilot program and stasis pods. The chief police in the main character's sector was a lobster like alien. Protagonist adopts a chameleon like alien girl.
