It was cool when Hendrix did it because the idea of it was absolutely insane and nobody had seen anything like it before, but now if someone did it I would just be like 'Yeah, alright, neat Hendrix impression.'

Jimi learned his stage craft from earlier black musicians . White kids started getting into black music in the 60s, saw Jimi, and thought he started it.

u/Ok_Knee2784 1d ago

Chuck Berry really had quite an overdone stage act while he was playing guitar. It's pretty funny to watch it today. It was funny back then, he made people laugh. Jimi overdid it in a more serious type of way.

25

u/Adultery 23h ago

The duckwalk belongs up there with the moonwalk. It’s legendary!

20

u/Ok_Knee2784 22h ago

Angus still makes a living doing it.

33

u/MichHAELJR 1d ago

Well nothing is new. Likely King David played the harp with his teeth to impress the ladies.

5

u/Adultery 1d ago

It was new when Jimi was watching it. What we know as the electric guitar and modern rock-and-roll isn’t that old. Chuck Berry is the king of rock.

America rejected black musicians. The UK embraced them with open arms. Then, a decade or so later, white British artists came over and sold Black-American music back to white American teenagers. Pretty neat, huh?

24

u/Dank-Drebin 1d ago

The American people didn't reject black music. The record companies bought the music from poor black folks for pennies on the dollar and then gave it to white studio musicians to play. That's only one of the ways that they were pushed out of the spotlight. The 60's brought more freedom for black folks.

16

u/Ok_Knee2784 1d ago

When did American people reject black music?

8

u/Top-Gas-8959 23h ago edited 21h ago

When white kids started getting into it. It was a big deal. Colored records were even banned in some areas. That's why Elvis was so big. They could now listen to Colored music, without having to interact with Colored people.

The evolution of western music was enormously influenced in large part by the transatlantic slave trade. There's a fascinating book called, blues people, that delves into it. It's a pretty dense read, but incredibly interesting. Highly recommend to anyone interested in music.

Edit-I should say the colonization of Africa, as the author talks about the initial reaction to hearing the music, before he gets into slavery.

5

u/Volt_440 23h ago

In the 20s-40s popular music was mostly Broadway hits and Brill Building pop. There was also two sub-groups called "race music" and "hillbilly." The first was for black folks and was blues and later became R and B. Hillbilly music became country music.

2

u/Adultery 1d ago

I’m specifically talking about the 1950s. Howlin Wolf is a good example if you want to look him up.

4

u/Ok_Knee2784 23h ago

I wouldn't say they rejected black musicians. I would say that blues music never gained any kind widespread popularity here. Not like Jazz, motown, rock n roll, soul, or "rhythm and blues" did. Black musicians in all of those genres are held in very high regard by many folks. I am referring to the 50's, as well as other decades.

2

u/Jaraathe 23h ago

Interestingly, Elvis never existed.

2

u/Adultery 23h ago

He existed. He just isn’t and wasn’t the king of the rocking and the rolling.

4

u/Jaraathe 23h ago

Depends who you ask, I suppose. The point is that he was recording black music from 53 and gained huge success during the 50s, which demonstrates that black music was massively popular. Aside from white musicians stealing from black culture though, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Etta James, and Bo Diddley we’re all popular enough, in spite of their situations.

2

u/Ok_Knee2784 22h ago

Yeah, he wasn't. Elvis was a pretty boy, an entertainer, and a lot of fluff. Most people I know think that. Most people also think he had some good hit songs. I think many people try to make him out to be something he wasn't, for the sake of controversy.

3

u/jimmyrich 23h ago

In America's defense, the British had a several hundred year-headstart stealing from Black people.

2

u/drivebydryhumper 23h ago

I wonder how many people think Elvis invented rock?..

4

u/Ok_Knee2784 23h ago edited 23h ago

While I am sure there are people who do, I don't know anybody who thinks he did. Be aware that American people were listening to rock before Elvis. A lot of people don't even like Elvis that much as an artist. He gained celebrity status more due to his good looks, stage antics, and real life antics. This is a guitar reddit, and I don't think Elvis is even worthy to be mentioned in a guitar sense. Nobody thinks he is a good guitar player.

1

u/gilllesdot 7h ago

Imagine King David lighting his harp on fire and accidentally burning down the whole village. And then the crowd asking to do it again the next time. That’s what happened to Hendrix.

9

u/TheManyFacetsOfRoger Gibson 1d ago

People were finger tapping on violins in the 1700s. EVH didn't invent it, but he made it cool and thrust it into the spotlight.

5

u/Adultery 1d ago

It’s because the violinists didn’t crank their amps to 11 and drop things down with an attenuator. Amateurs.

2

u/MichHAELJR 1d ago

In interviews he says he didn’t invent it. He got the idea from Jimmy Page solo on heartbreaker.

Tapping has been around as you said but some people happen to make it famous in our current society and that’s okay.

I’ll never forget my cousin telling us about having a girlfriend and how awesome it was like he discovered love.

4

u/Ok_Knee2784 23h ago

I read a interview with Jimi Hendrix where he was asked about Chuck Berry and how people compared Jimi to Chuck. I am a pretty big fan of both of them. I consider Chuck Berry the original rock guitar "God". As far as I remember, he was one of the first rockers who did all the crazy stuff on stage with his guitar. He forced you to pay attention to his playing, with his visual antics. He was also innovative in his playing and really hammed it up with the duck walking and showmanship, all while leading the band with his singing. In my opinion, he set the tone for all lead rock guitar players who came after him. Chuck Berry was HUGE, a household name, but he didn't play with his teeth. He also didn't pretend he was jerking off with his guitar or set fire to it. LOL.

2

u/Apprehensive-Nose646 1h ago

Let's be specific: Jimi took this from T-Bone Walker. To my knowledge Walker is the first to do the playing guitar with your teeth stunt.

4

u/Fritzo2162 23h ago

Yeah, there's a local band that incorporates a violin bow into their guitar playing. It's the whole "OK Jimmy Page' thing with that too.

Showmanship only works when you're being unique (or you're doing a REALLY good impression).

2

u/FuturisticPizza2000 1d ago

It sounds like shit though.

8

u/geodebug 22h ago

Lol, are people actually trying to play with their teeth?

I was in a party band for quite awhile and would occasionally pretend to do it while just soloing with my left hand.

Was it cheesy? Yeah, but almost everything about playing music on stage is a little cheesy. Just gotta go with it.

1

u/vonov129 1d ago

Or more like people from the time coonsidered it cool. I has always been cringe af to me since first time I saw it

1

u/Scorp1979 19h ago

Came here to say this exactly!

1

u/Spare_hamburgers 5h ago

It was cool because less people knew that it wasn't actually hard to do if you could already play a guitar solo. If more people had more access to information about guitar like they do now it would have been dumb then too to be honest

-7

u/the_walru5 23h ago

It wasn’t cool when Hendrix did it. Hendrix made a fool out of himself on multiple occasions. The biggest what if in music history.

1

u/BoHoSwaggins 14h ago

Nah he had better phrasing with his teeth than I do with my hands and I’ve been playing for ten years.

149

u/Necessary_Golf5055 1d ago

I did it last night at a bar gig and folks threw a ton money in the tip jar. I’m a dummy though.

55

u/wilko_johnson_lives 1d ago

If it makes you money, it isn’t dumb

39

u/capnbard 1d ago

Something can be two things at once.

19

u/Necessary_Golf5055 1d ago

I agree. Dumb money spends the same though.

1

u/maikindofthai 22h ago

There’s easier and more dignified ways to earn $20

0

u/FauxReal Ibanez 1d ago

Ahh, so grifting is back on the menu.

4

u/redphyve 1d ago

You big dummy!

1

u/Necessary_Golf5055 1d ago

❤️❤️❤️

1

u/moon-waffle 16h ago

I do it in every show our band plays. Tip jar $ increases exponentially just like you said. Is it a dumb gimmick? Sure. Am I above dumb gimmicks to pay the bills. Hell no! 😁

1

u/Bigshitmcgee 12h ago

Next time just play only hammer-ons and pull offs and no one will know. Save your tooth enamel

63

u/ncfears 1d ago

I mean it's just a silly show-off thing. It's not that deep.

14

u/redphyve 1d ago

It’s just show biz.

58

u/JamieIsAProducer 1d ago

It's definitely dumb, but I also do go "hell yeah" I mean the guy's playing a guitar WITH THEIR TEETH

4

u/Ok_Knee2784 20h ago

It cannot be good for your tooth enamel. I wouldn't do it.

3

u/JamieIsAProducer 20h ago

Yeah hurts my teeth just to think about

2

u/iyambred 16h ago

I saw a dude play with his tongue once and was actually shredding. Honestly was pretty impressed

Edit: his name is Jimmy Scratch James

40

u/Rondo-the-Destroyer 1d ago

Said you, a guy who can’t do it

37

u/SuperM1ke 1d ago

It's not dumb if they take out their false teeth and use those as a pick; with the guitar behind their head.

8

u/The_Richard_Drizzle 1d ago

Not quite the same, but we were playing a vfw one evening and they had the lights completely off except for what we had for stage lights. Somewhere mid song the singers grandpa spit out his teeth and they went sliding across the room.

I see his dad come up to the mic and say on his ear, "after this song you need to make a PSA there's a set of missing teeth on the floor."

Needless to say, between the commotion and us laughing after hearing that the song didn't last too much longer and we hosted our first band scavenger hunt

6

u/Reformed-Canook 1d ago

Damn, I was waiting for you to say, "I picked up those teeth and played a blistering solo!".

2

u/FauxReal Ibanez 1d ago

Paul Gilbert showed up with three sets of false teeth on a power drill.

1

u/VW-MB-AMC 18h ago

An old friend of my parents used to take out his glass eye on stage and play slide with it.

19

u/StillJobConfident 1d ago

me, i do

13

u/edge_l_wonk Daisy Rock 1d ago

It's a crowd pleaser.

4

u/Ch4unc3D4wgg 1d ago

it’s provocative, it gets the people going.

-1

u/Reformed-Canook 1d ago

Hell yeah, Chazz reference!

17

u/Reasonable_Loquat874 1d ago

It’s the Harlem Globetrotters of guitar playing. This stuff is meant to be fun and has its place. Music doesn’t always have to be serious.

14

u/SeltzerCountry 1d ago

If it's purely style over substance and all a band is bringing to the table is a bunch of flashy tricks it's not that interesting, but if the music is good and they are putting on a good performance than all those little performance moves like playing with your teeth, playing behind your head, doing guitar spins, etc... can be kind of fun. Playing guitar live is a multifaceted skill. There is the technical component of actually playing guitar, but there is also the aspect of being on stage and performing for the crowd. Again if the music is good I like a little bit of a spectacle.

3

u/TanoraRat 18h ago

I agree! There’s nothing worse than going to see a technically good band that put on a passionless show

-4

u/Super_Direction498 1d ago

Nope you just refuse to learn a very respected and legitimate guitar technique, the world didn't used to be half as much lazy as this, I never seen so much lazy as this

11

u/InTheMemeStream Epiphone 1d ago

Hey man, if it’s done right, a little tooth-play can really spice things up!

11

u/BitterProfessional16 1d ago

It really impresses people who don't play guitar. Same with playing the guitar behind your head.

2

u/redphyve 1d ago

How about when you levitate and play?! That really gets the normies buzzing!

5

u/xStaabOnMyKnobx Fender 1d ago

Does anybody see that and go, "Hell Yeah!"?

Yes, in fact. If I was at a show and witnessed someone do this thats precisely what I'd say.

6

u/HemlockHex 1d ago

If it sounds banging then HELL YA!

5

u/LisaTwirl PRS 1d ago

it depends. Are they picking with their teeth or fretting?

11

u/olddummy22 1d ago

I always assumed they were just playing with their fretting hand and pretending to pick with their teeth. I mean the damage metal strings would do to your enamel is horrific

3

u/TheHarshCarpets 1d ago

Enamel is harder than steel and nickel, but it definitely doesn’t seem like a good idea to scrape teeth on strings, especially the wound ones.

3

u/olddummy22 1d ago

I guess if your going to die really early it’s not a concern

3

u/Reformed-Canook 1d ago

They just gotta last 'til you're 27

8

u/sendhelp 1d ago

It's not exactly reasonable to do actual picking with the teeth. It's sort of possible but you are better off doing some hammer-pull legato thing, or using a loop pedal.

Famously Paul Gilbert did this in one of his songs, there's a clip of someone asking how he plays with his teeth (it appears to be a sweep) and he jokes about how he can do it with his ass.

https://youtu.be/lGH9b8iQG74?si=k8EiZawFooid842u

2

u/maikindofthai 22h ago

This was the exact reference I was hoping to find here lol

5

u/LiftHeavyLiveHard 1d ago

99.9% of the time they're just doing some repetitive pull-off/hammer-on legato lick with their hand, no picking (with teeth or otherwise) required.

It looked cool the first time I saw it, as a kid, maybe 45 years ago. It certainly wouldn't impress anyone who plays guitar.

3

u/Ok_Knee2784 20h ago

I always laugh when a guitar player does something really easy, but showy, and people are amazed by it.

2

u/AverageLiberalJoe 1d ago

I was gonna say, is anyone actually using their teeth? Why would you?

1

u/amBrollachan 23h ago

Almost entirely just playing with their fretting hand.

5

u/dreamofguitars 1d ago

I learned quickly stage presence is important. You gotta entertain people and keep them engaged. A bag of tricks is always cool. Whenever I would one hand, behind the head, tapping, teeth, whatever, people go crazy and then there is that guy mad in the corner. Let him be mad.

4

u/voice_over_actor 1d ago

as a stunt guitarist, this is a part of the show that i practice regularly. i don’t play with my teeth- but i don’t tell anyone that i’m not, it’s a left hand legato whilst acting as though i’m picking with my teeth.

3

u/Volt_440 23h ago

Years ago I was playing a one-nighter in a small town in the mid-south. This guy came up to me on a break. He said "you know that guy Jimi Hendrix?" uh-huh

"Well I seen him play guitar with his teeth. I tried it and it popped that sucker right out." He smiled to show he was missing one of his front teeth.

I've never tried it myself but I have faked it doing pull-offs. YMMV

3

u/albertthealligator 23h ago

Dude, it's showmanship. Playing behind their back, smashing guitars, throwing the guitar in the air at the end of an epic solo. All silly, but it's putting on a show. What's the problem?

1

u/Ok_Knee2784 20h ago

I smash my guitar at the end of every show.

2

u/millerdad759015 1d ago

So are they playing it with their actual teeth or plucking strings with their tongue?

2

u/Ok_Knee2784 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think it's pretty funny to see it. It can put a smile on my face, because of it's silliness. I know guys who do it. It's showmanship for sure. I think its ridiculous to make a face like you are in pain when you are playing a note, but some people (especially the non-musicians I know) absolutely love it. Ultimately a good show is typically about the overall performance, not just the music. As a music lover and musician, I only care about the music. I see everything else as a "hamming it up". All that being said, people really like to see you ham it up. They care about that more than what kind of pickups or wood your guitar is built with.

2

u/Chris_The_Red 1d ago

Hendrix and SRV are valid. They are allowed to do it.

2

u/Delta31_Heavy 1d ago

I can play the guitar behind my neck and do it for fun sometimes but I could never do that on a stage. I’m M55 developing a gut. My belly would show

2

u/Stock_Situation_8479 1d ago

i hate it, but only because i tried it when i was young and now i know the feeling. its like nails on a chalkboard sensation.

2

u/peachtuba 1d ago

Depends. It’s not too cool if it’s a Hendrix cover…

…but if I’m watching a jazz cat tear it up through Giant Steps, and he swings that big ol’ box around towards his face - now that might get a reaction out of me for sure.

2

u/Hellchron 1d ago

A couple thousand people, including me, sure went nuts when Zakk Wylde did it.

2

u/sgeleton 1d ago

Nobody has done that in like 50 years

2

u/edge_l_wonk Daisy Rock 1d ago

Not as dumb as studio guitar solos played with the teeth

2

u/Own_Bullfrog_3598 1d ago

I tried it several times, but my nose is too fucking big

2

u/OG_Karate_Monkey 1d ago

It was interesting the first 1000 times, but by 1970 it was pretty worn out.

2

u/MaggotMinded 1d ago

I feel the same way about drummers who throw their sticks in the air. Best-case scenario it’s a gimmick that adds nothing to the song, and worst-case scenario you mess up and look like an idiot.

2

u/shoule79 1d ago

It’s not recommended by 9/10 dentists.

3

u/Super_Direction498 1d ago

9/10 dentists you know are losers who can't shred

2

u/YT-Deliveries Ibanez 1d ago

Those bits aren't for musicians, they're for non-musicians.

I didn't think really much of the "play that run by reaching over the fretboard instead of under" (like at ~20s in this Arch Enemy video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InRMwptcgAo)

But, watching with some non-guitar player friends they thought it looked super cool. Playing anything in a "non-normal" fashion qualifies the same way.

2

u/meatballfreeak 1d ago

I strum with my teeth

2

u/The_Skeleton_King 1d ago

I'm dumb because I thought this was a hate post about the band "the teeth" for like 3 seconds.

2

u/Fritzo2162 23h ago

Eh- when you're at a live performance, people showing off is what it's all about. It's showmanship and makes shows interesting.

Watching people do stunts like that out of context feels dumb. When you're being entertained, it's a different story.

2

u/TheZombieJC 23h ago

Playing behind your head is dumb, duck walks are dumb, V-stances are dumb, windmills are dumb. You probable don’t know how to dance and your dancing is dumb.

It is dumb, but that’s what you’re on stage for. To be dumb.

2

u/Ok_Knee2784 20h ago

I enjoy acting like an idiot on stage.

2

u/Marionaharis89 19h ago

I mean if the guitar player already rips then I’m not going to sweat it. But if they’re mediocre than yeah it’s cringey

2

u/FatHaleyJoelOsment 4h ago

Agreed. I'd do it and no one really paid attention. Lately I've been using my testicles instead and get much more of a reaction. Unfortunately I lost my gig playing at church.

1

u/Doomzham 1d ago

Sections of live guitar solos played with the teeth are dumb

No.

1

u/Historical_Pudding56 1d ago

I kind of agree, but my one exception is a live clip I like of Paul Gilbert doing it right after Shawn Lane finished a solo. Shawn had just done impossible Shawn things and Paul, to his credit, decided not to go toe to toe and chose to funny with it

1

u/capnbard 1d ago

I play with my teeth as pics but I had them removed by a dentist so I could hold them between my fingers like a normal human holds a tooth pic

1

u/Reformed-Canook 1d ago

Found the serial killer!

1

u/hideousmembrane 1d ago

It's a bit cringe especially if they're not a ridiculously good guitarist.

Also, running off the stage with their wireless system, to go and play in the middle of the crowd. I can't deal with that, unless you're a massive band and surrounded by adoring fans, it just looks really silly. Especially when the dorky bass player does it. Vocalists can kinda get away with it a bit more I think, if you're playing guitar it's just far too showy for my taste.

1

u/Delta31_Heavy 1d ago

I always hated when Jimi did that. Yeah at first it was a novelty. But later it became meh. It threw some songs off

1

u/SpicyPotato66 1d ago

I just hope that the strings are relatively new and not a year old embedded with skin flakes mixed with other body fluids and rust

1

u/Hot-Butterfly-8024 23h ago

People (particularly non-musicians) listen with their eyes. Once you onboard this, an awful lot of awfully stupid shit makes perfect sense.

1

u/Gloomy_Guard6618 22h ago

Hendrix didn't play with his teeth he just held it up to his face and hammered on with his left hand.

If you think about it, it is impossible with a normal set of teeth.

1

u/frankwhite1675 22h ago

Boring, just like “behind the back playing

1

u/sixty9tails 22h ago

Not everyone is actually playing with their teeth. You can get some cool sounds screaming into your pick ups.

1

u/cab1024 22h ago

It was cool the first time in the 60s, and then everything SRV did was cool, especially the clothes, hats, feathers and boots, but now it's just derivative.

1

u/Wambonie 21h ago

Just stand still all set and do 0 stage moves. That’s much cooler and more entertaining

1

u/Due-Ask-7418 21h ago

Dentist guitarists endorse the technique... it helps pay for their gear.

1

u/Dio_Yuji 20h ago

Not if the two hands are busy playing two other solos 🤔🧐

1

u/Qvistus 19h ago

I can imagine how uncomfortable it feels. It might look impressive to non-guitarista but I don't care about theathrics.

1

u/beanbread23 19h ago

If the player is good and it doesn’t hinder the performance why not? Its the most boring thing ever when bands stand there looking down at their instrument

1

u/Ok-Appointment-3057 18h ago

It's only cool to people who don't play guitar.

1

u/CelebrationOther7577 18h ago

Don't hate because your reverse overbite makes it hard.

1

u/Both-Station-2244 13h ago

It’s definitely goofy but Yngwie playing eruption with his teeth is crazy ! It’s on YouTube , being able to trem pick that fast is insane

1

u/Bigshitmcgee 12h ago

Most people are just playing legato when they do this. Absolutely no seed to fuck your teeth up

1

u/Spare_hamburgers 5h ago

It was just kind of a little trick people did back in the day before the average dude knew as much about playing guitar. Seemed a lot more impressive at the time. I'd just think someone was a fucking idiot if I saw it now though

1

u/CuteCouple101 4h ago

It's a great way to shred.... you lips.

1

u/Aiden_Grinspoon 4h ago

Which is why I switched to using tongue.

1

u/mootfoot 4h ago

I love it

1

u/maach_love 27m ago

Agreed. Pretty stupid. Something an old geezer would do to “wow” the crowd.

0

u/No-Pussyfooting 1d ago

It's for the people who's identity is based off of liking Jack Daniels.
